1851 census search help...
« on: Saturday 10 April 10 16:33 BST (UK) »
I have an ancestor born 1830.
He was born Kettering, Nth. Married in Mkt Hboro in 1853
I have him in 1841/61/71/81 (he died 1883) but cannot find him in 1851.

I have tried various ideas to no avail I wondered if another researcher could offer advice.
Have been using ancestry and have noticed that the spelling aren't always right. ( Market Harborough is NK on one listing) how do I serach this site (or others) which would perhaps bring up this elusive realtive of mine????
Have tried using just T no surname/ Just R no first name/wildcard for surname...
I'm stumped.
(just thought hope it ok to post can we use "brand names" )

:P That would help. Long day!
Thomas ROLLINS/RAWLINS.
He spelt Rawlins in earlier census returns. He would be 21yrs.
In 1841 he is listed in Tanners Lane, Kett. with:
Ann Goode 78, William 30, Ann 8

(Parents Ruth (goode) and Thomas) so think Ann is grandmother and William an uncle (?)
Mother died by 1833 have yet to find further info on father.
Ann is serv in 1851.

Good job I checked the 1841 details you gave!

He is aged 11 in 1841
Quote
I have an ancestor born 1811

Ann is aged 8

William aged 30 is Rawlins - not Goode

So his birthyear appears to be circa 1829/30 otherwise he would have been 42yrs old when he married in 1853

Is this possibly why you are having problems finding him in 1851?

Sorry Carole W. I was obviously thinking he aged 11 when typed birth year. Have changed original post now and Anns age. I was even copying  the 1841 census in front of me.
(Lack of sleep from teething baby has frazzled my brain will start again tomorrow I think :))

Thank you yonderpeasasnt. Will look into this one further.

But just think how gorgeous baby will be when all his/her teeth are through - well worth the sleep deprivation (not that babies aren't gorgeous without teeth as well!!)
