« on: Thursday 08 April 10 21:49 BST (UK) »
Wondering if anybody can help -pretty vague question, sorry but... if a lad in the 1950'swho lived in Ellesmere Port was sent to borstal or a detention centre where would they have gone? Was there such a thing in Ellesmere Port?

I have no idea, but would guess that there was a Borstal in most large towns, so maybe he was sent to Liverpool, or Manchester.  I think some of the Borstals were in old army camps.  Presumablly the "lad in the 1950s" is still alive?  If so you could ask him  ;D

Thanks for replying.  Unfortunately the lad is not still alive so I will have to go back to the drawing board!
Thanks

Hello Vogel,

The Chester History and Heritage Centre may well be able to help you with this query. They are in the old St Michaels's church on Bridge Street Row. Telephone 01244 402110.

I think that there were some institutions as these in the Chester area.

Jo

There was probably a Borstal for Merseyside.
