James EMERY 1824

Hi

I am looking to confirm the DOB of my GG grandfather, and his final resting place

 His name is James EMERY son of Isaac Emery 1801 and Elizabeth Croot 1804 born in Potton Bedfordshire England I believe he was born sept or Nov 1824.first two wives died  he stayed with his 3rd wife Emma lenton up untill he tried the kill her and I have lost all trace of him from about 1881. they lived at 92 bemerton street Islington on the 1881 census

Also  his brother William EMERY DOB  also have Sept nov 1824 where they twins?

Any info on James EMERY will be most welcomed as he has been driving just crazy

Hi Merlin,

no, I had though for a long time that he  died somewhere in London. However his brother thomas Emery was deported for far less crimes than James committed.

others also think william emery was deported too but i don't think he was

Yes, I was curious as you have him born/baptised 1824 & still on the 1881 census so that makes him at least 57yo, not that people didn't travel o/s at that age, just erring more on the side that he didn't 

I'd say that seeing you have Thomas & James both listed as born 1824 it's more likely you have a baptism of both of them on the same day which was quite common for parents to have more than one child baptised together but there is always the possibility they were twins.

It's possible he died in an institution or even gaol if he tried to kill his wife

Perhaps James death could be in the second quarter of 1884, registered at Holborn, London and referenced as Vol 1b, page 558 ? If so, then he was aged 63, giving birth year of about 1821.

Jane, I cannot see where he came to Australia, transportation of convicts to any of the colonies in OZ had long ceased by 1881 when you lost track of him ...

Perhaps if you post on the Middlesex board they will be able to help find your James...

That one at Holborn i have looked at a number of times but James ages on the census and his weddings didn't fit. i know ages are very estimated

I have already paid for middlesex archivest to spend sometime looking for James and she has said he died between 1881 and 1891

Hello Jane

I take it you checked out the Beds Archives gaol database. James Emery of Potton is recorded a number of times between 1841 age 16 & 1856 age 32 (the last offence neglect of family) making him born 1824/1825.  In 1844 his brother, Thomas Emery aged 17 was sentenced to 10 years transportation to Van Diemens Land via the 'Pestonjee Bomanjee' in Sept 1845.

Also from the Beds Archives catalogue I found some references to James Emery of Potton, one being the attempted suicide of James Emery's wife in June 1887.

have a James Emery arriving on Pestongee Bomangee (2) (its second voyage to VDL with convicts)
He was tried for a serious crime in company at Somerset 31 March 1846, the ship departed 25 Oct 1846, arrived 17 Feb 1847.  That James was aged 23, Single,  Protestant and he could read.  His native place was recorded as Near Bath.  His sentence was Life...   He was still in Tasmania in 1856, and a pardon was issued in Feb 1857.

There's also a Thomas Emery arriving on Pestongee Bomangee (1) and that voyage was in late 1845.

I have not seen that Bedfordshire & Luton Archives Service
Catalogue before.

It is very usefull when looking at  this emery family, not saying they were alway in trouble! the strange thing is Thomas Emery aquired a chicken and some pototes and was deported for it. James was in and out of Goal for and was never deported.
