Hello, probably 50 plus years ago i had a pen pal from scotland, her name was doris mackenzie and the only thing i can remember is her address was something like  Doris Mackenzie, Bettyhill by Thurso, sutherland scotland.  I had head that in the 1960's she had moved to canada.  Would any one have any information on her or the family. thank you, marlene ward , lodi, ohio usa :

Hi Marlene

Thurso is actually in Caithness, not Sutherland. You'll need to give us more information on Doris, such as when she was born, parents names or if she was married when you knew her.

ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk has 21 Doris Mackenzie's born in Scotland between 1900 and 1960, none of whom were born in either Caithness or Sutherland.
All countries/counties
Kinnes, Ostler (and all variations!!)

Scotland
Caithness: Sutherland and Gunn (Latheron), Mowat (Olrig, Canisbay)
Fife: Fleming, Harley, Small, Laing, Malcolm
Angus/Forfarshire: Small, Laing (Dundee)
Perthshire: Runciman, Whittet, Paul, Small
Midlothian: Dudgeon, Sanderson (Tranent)

England
Gloucestershire: Edkins, Trowton/Troughton
Warwickshire: Bromley, Vickers, Hydon

Unfortunately Rootschat isn't a forum for tracing living people so we can't post details here. Living People section of Help pages explains this and gives links to hints for tracing living people.

sorry i didnt know i couldnt ask about a living person.  The person i was checking was born around 1940 as we were school girls together and all i knew is that she lived in bettyhill scotland and immigrated i think to canada when she was in her 20's.  Any other info on how to check would be helpful though, love this site, didnt mean to do something i shouldnt have.  marlene

If you click on the link I posted earlier you'll see links that I mentioned. Sites like Facebook, etc. are great for finding living people and you could also try using a search engine like Google to locate something online.

Not that it is significantly relevant, while Thurso is in Caithness, I believe that Bettyhill is in Sutherland.

Hi , You could try joining countysutherland (free), someone there might be able to help you. Another idea might be to send a letter to the postmaster/postmistress  at Bettyhill Postoffice. Sutherland. I remember Doris from schooldays in Dornoch..........she was a few years younger than me.

Just looking through this old threat and noticed the last one to enter anything was Ray Mackay

Can I ask Ray do you have relatives or had relatives born in Helmsdale

Some of my family have Mackay as their middle name

A grt Aunt Jessie Mackay McKenzie ( born New Zealand )

Grt grt grandmother Janet Mackay Gordon born Helmsdale married there to Alexander McKenzie

Its just a thought as I cannot find where the Mackay comes from in the family tree

Most likely there will be loads of Mackays like Mckenzie
