Gibraltar records
« on: Wednesday 07 April 10 15:58 BST (UK) »

I am searching for details of the marriage of an English soldier stationed in Gibraltar in the 1890’s when he married a Gibraltarian there.

Also, I have a copy of the Certificate of the birth on 6th November 1889 of his first born extracted from the Register of Births of the 18 Cy. Eastern Division Royal Artillery registered at the Military Station at Gibraltar.  I believe there were two further children born there later and would like to know how to find these details too.

Who would keep these records (preferably in the UK as I have that Ancestry sub.)  Many thanks for any help  :)

The General Register Office has 'overseas' events here

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/faqs-overseas.asp

You haven't updated your profile so we don't know where you are but the complete set of these are available around the UK

Greater Manchester County Record Office
Birmingham Central Library
Bridgend Reference and Information Library
Plymouth Central Library
City of Westminster Archives Centre
London Metropolitan Archives
The British Library

They are also available to search with a subscription at Find My Past.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply Dawn, I will check that out over the weekend.  I have just started looking into my husband's family history - after 40 years  ::) !

I am living in France  by the way and have just come across a case of old photos and letters.  My husband's father's line has been done (by someone else) but I wanted to look into his mothers side.  I was a bit 'stuck' when I found that the first two children were born in Gibraltar.  Thank you again for replying Dawn, I'm looking forward to seeing what I can find.

Dear All,
Larry Sawchuk's "Gibraltar Explorer", which up to now has only been available on disk, is now available for download free at
http://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/~sawchukl/genealogy/

It includes fully searchable versions of the 1777, 1791 and 1878 censuses, as well as images, movies, history, maps, list of street names and many other items of interest to anyone interested in our past and our genealogy.

Cheers  8)

Rivierableu I have only just found this topic.

I too have a chap who was born in Gibraltar but was a British citizen.

My question is how on earth can I find his birth in Gibraltar. How did you manage to find and then get your certificates.

It's driving me crazy trying to find anyone who can point me in the right direction.
