Before I read Jean's reply, my first thought was Portsea.

Modified - If you look on Findmypast, the original census image is much clearer and is definitely Portsea.

A bit far streached...  Undecided as he is from Chester

I don't know why you think it is far fetched for a man born in Chester to be married to someone from Portsea, Hampshire.  He had obviously travelled to London, so maybe they met there - perhaps Frances was in service or something.

Hi Again

Not found the marriage yet, but I suppose you have the details of Benjamin's baptism?  If not, he was baptised on 27 April 1874 at St.Olave, Chester, his parents were William and Sarah.

They had a number of children christened in London and two had middle surnames which may (or not) be Frances's maiden name

William Burdett Cowdroy (1821) and Samuel Hawarth Cowdroy (1831)

There are more children:

Maria Smith Cowdroy Baptism  25 Dec 1825  parents Benjamin Cowdroy and Fanny Cowdroy
Edward Cowdroy Baptism 15 Feb 1824     Benjamin Cowdroy and Frances Cowdroy

Still no sign of a marriage though.

Yes Portsea is in the south of England.  It could be that Frances decided to see the highlife and moved to London.

It did cross my mind that as the births of the children are on line, as is Benjamin's baptism and that of his siblings (and his parents marriage too), it is odd that his and Frances marriage doesn't show up.  I wonder if they did actually marry.

In case you haven't got it, the parents marriage:

William Cowdroy to Sarah Powell, 6 April 1774, St.Oswald, Chester, Cheshire

Benjamin had the following siblings:

John James bap. 29.8.1776
Thomas bap.16.3.1779
Marie Elisabeth bap.21.3.1782
Caroline bap.6.1.1791

There also seems to be another child a Mary Powell Cordroy bap. 16.12.1813, but with a different mother, called Martha.  The address then was Stalybridge, Cheshire, so this might be a different William Cowdroy.

Benjamin is the son of William Cowdroy founder of the Manchester gazette.

Looking at the following link

http://www.rootschat.com/links/08e8/

it seems to me that Benjamin was possibly the grandson of the original founder of the Manchester Gazette.  The Gazette was founded in 1795 and when William died in 1814, his eldest son William took over as Editor.
