Have just managed to have a better look at all the information you've given me.  I didn't know John Powell born Glasbury Brecon Wales  about 1832 (1851 Census) was married to Mary AUBREY, but that would seem to be logical if they named their son William Aubrey Powell.  I think John died 23.9.1904, but I have no definite proof even though I have a copy of the death certificate, to link him to parents John Powell and Mary James.  If he is my John Powell he wasn't born in North Wales in 1841, or had father William Powell and mother Elizabeth Morgan.
John does have a brother William, but he was still in Wales later than 1851 and as far as I can find out stayed in Wales and England until his death.
I really need to apply for some more BDM certificates in the United Kingdom.  Still have a lot to do!  I am more confident about Annie Powell and James Lewis and Mary Ann Powell and John Jones, because of the ref to them in the Genealogical & Personal History of Western Pennsylvania Published 1915, reprinted may 1999 by Lewis Historical Publishing Co.
Will keep working on all your info over the next week in between family commitments!!   Thank you so much you have given me a lot to work on.  Do you have a connection to the Powells in Pennsylvania?
Have just had another look at the 1851 census for Glamorganishire in Wales and there is a Maria Aubrey b 1835 aged 16 living in Merthyr Tydfil the same as John Powell who is 19 in the same census living in Merthyr Tydfil also!!  No luck with a marriage on Free BDM!
Perhaps they married in USA?!
Must stop now and start again tomorrow.

Many thanks, Dash

Hello Dashap.

No I don't have any connection to the Powells, just doing the look ups or a little research if I can help out.  Amazing what you can find. Have also seen Aubrey written as Auberly, perhaps it is just a cooincidence !!  I also looked for a marraige of Mary Aubrey to John Powell the other day but could'nt see anything. Hope the research is all coming together.  ;D

The motto is - Never say never. (Is that a Winston Churchill quote !!) Look whats turned up today !! The 1880 census said John was 47 years making the birth year 1833. This 1900 gives Nov 1841 and we've nothing in between to check on.  ???
According to what you read on this Census you would have to think that both Mary and John were already in Pennsylvania, both show early immigration dates, the marriage looks as if that could have been in the USA as well  ???

1900 Census Freeland, Luzerne, Pennsylvania

John M Powel 58 Born Nov 1841 Wales. Marriage Year 1870. Married 30 years. Immigration 1866. Years in the USA 34. Agent.
Mary Powel 56 Born Sept 1843 Wales. Had 7 children and 4 survive. Immigrated 1868
Ada Powel 25 Born March 1878. Seamstress
John H Powel 23 Born Jan 1877 At School or Art School !! ?
Wm Duobray Powel 20 Born July 1879 The image is Aubrey. Labourer

I've just spent several hours checking between the various UK Census details, the Free BDM and  Family Search as well as all your postings.  John Powell is still single and living with his parents in Merthyr Tydfil in the 1861 census, so there is not much more I can find out about him before he immigrates in 1866, that will help link him indisputably with the John Powell you have found in the 1880 US census.  You mentioned a 1870 record with John and Mary, what did it say?
I have found a Maria Aubrey working as a servant in London in 1861.  There are lots of transcription errors on the typed page, but it can be seen quite clearly on the original. Such as Sarah Dewbrey, which is meant to be Aubrey,  Shalonda Mannevy, which is meant to be Sophia Manning etc. Maria Aubury is listed as being a servant in the Relation column, when the original says "Niece" ...   you get the picture!!   However the original gives Maria Aubrey's birthplace as Berkshire .. when I want it to say Merthyr Tydfil, where I think she was bapt 30 June, 1837, daughter of John Aubrey and Elizabeth C057191.  However I am also having trouble finding how she could be Sarah  and Sophia's (whose maiden name was Aubrey) niece. Did they fill in her birth in Berkshire, because that's where she was born or because it followed on from what they filled in for themselves???
IGI has Sarah and Sophia both being baptised at St Mary Lambeth, Surrey, although Sophia has William and Mary as parents, whereas Sarah only has a mother named Elizabeth????  I can't link these women to John Aubrey, as I would need to do if they are claiming Maria as their niece. They are also closer to her grandfather's age then her father's.
Maria Aubrey's grandfather would seem to be the William Aubrey aged 50 watchmaker listed with the family John 30 Iron miner, Elizabeth 30 his wife and children Elizabeth 7, Maria 6 and David 2 all living around Merthyr Tydfil. So it's all a bit confusing!

My 94 year old Powell cousin is very intrigued with the US Powell women being seamstresses as some of the cousins in Australia were dressmakers too.  However I think a lot of women at that time were dressmakers as we didn't have many factories making clothes like we do esp. in China nowadays.
Is there any way I can apply for a marriage certificate for John Powell and Mary?  Would they be held by the Pennsylvanian authorities?  That seems my only hope of making a definite connection across the Atlantic.
 ??? ???
I should have a bit more time to work on this now things are settling down this end.

Also are there immigration records for people coming into USA or did these only start later with Ellis Island?  I'm presuming you live in USA and so know more about these things?!?

Until next time, thanks for giving me so much of your time with my Powell family, it's much appreciated.

Dash ???

Hello Dash.

I was trying to work on the 1843 birth date and these records for Mary Ann Aubrey with parents John & Elizabeth but I was trying to tie that in with a Jane married to a William Powell
I have seen an 1841 with a Jane and parents John and Elizabeth but the Mothers age is out by 5 years compared to 1851/61. Also John and Jane are missing in 1851/1861 and Elizabeth the daughters age is out by 5 years in 1851  So not sure about 1841.

1851 Merthyr, Glamorgan, Wales

John Aubrey 41 Born Merthyr. Proclaimer. Farmer. IGI Record 1809 Merthyr Tydfil  Possible Parents John Aubrey and Ann
Elizabeth Aubrey 41
Elizabeth Aubrey 18
Maria Aubrey 16 IGI Record 30 June 1837
Daniel Aubrey 12 IGI Record says 14 April 1839
Mary Ann Aubrey 8
Amelia Aubrey 5
Louisa Aubrey 2
William Jones 83 Grand-Father.

1861 Merthyr Tydfil. Glamorgan. Wales

No 1 Pontmoslais

John Aubrey 51 Miner
Elizabeth Aubrey 51
Mary Ann Aubrey 18 Green-Grocer
Amelia Aubrey 15
Louisa Aubrey 12 Scholar
Emma Aubrey 9

Incidentally its not relevant but the Mary Ann Aubrey born 4 Oct 1846 to Thomas & Sarah Aubrey also ended up in Pennsylvania married to John Turnbach in Eckley Twp, Luzerne, Pennsylvania and Mary Ann also died in 1902 Freeland, Luzerne, Pennsylvania. Perhaps they could have been cousins though both coming from Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales. There is also an International Marriage Record for those 2 in PA 1867. Pity we could'nt find that for your couple.  ???  It is this Mary Ann's sister Jane who married William Powell I think  ???

Is this the John Powell you mean -

1851 Glagburg, Breconshire, Wales.

John Powell 51 Mason
Mary Powell 46
Henry Powell 22 Mason
John Powell 19 Mason
David Powell 17 Mason
Ann Powell 14
Mary Powell 12
William Powell 10 Attending Masons
Margt Powell 8
John Gower 18 Lodger
Harriet Jones 15 Niece

I have'nt seen Mary Aubrey or John Powell on any passenger lists that fits between 1861 and 1872. The earliest birth for one of the children was Jennet/Janet 1871/2. The problem is they could have married in Wales or on route or in Pennsylvania. ???

:) :)Yes, that is the correct John Powell!! The  Henry who is 22 is my great grandfather.  John's place of birth is actually Glasbury, however I know that several family trees on Ancestry have it spelt incorrectly.  That is very understandable as the writing on the original could easily be read that way.  However my husband is Welsh and we lived in Wales with his grandma for a while, so we have numerous maps of Wales, so I'm pretty sure it is Glasbury, a village on the A438 road to the southeast of Builth Wells. If you look on IGI C047761 you will see his baptism 29 May 1831 at Glasbury.

1861 Census

John Powell 63 mason

Margaret Powell 56  (this should read Mary, but as she signed her name with an X when she got married she obviously couldn't read what was written by the enumerator and they could have easily become muddled with the daughter whose name was Margaret.)

John Powell 29 mason ( our John)

Margaret Powell 18

My great grandfather Henry Powell sailed to Australia via USA in 1853, so he is not in the 1861 census.  However I was very fortunate, as Australian  BD&M certificates give a lot more information than the UK or US certificates and when he married he gave his father as John Powell and his mother as Mary Powell MS James, so I was able to find the marriage very easily.  Unlike John!!!

However as you say "never say never" ...  maybe a current US descendant still has the original !!   If only!

Thanks so much for persevering with this....  if you ever have the need for some research in Australia, I'd be only too happy to do all I could for you.
