Factory Road, Hengoed
« on: Saturday 03 April 10 16:03 BST (UK) »
On the 1891 census residing at 3 Factory Road, Hengoed, Gelligaer was Micah Lewis, boarder in the home of Fred Williams, his occupation spinner in a wool factory.  Micah Lewis's occupation  was a wool weaver.  Does anyone know where Factory Road is or was and if it was near to a wool factory?

Looking at Kellys Directory of Monmouthshire and South Wales 1895 Pt2 for Woollen Merchants near Gelligaer, there were a couple in Merthyr Tydfil. But no mention of Factory Road.

If memory serves correctly, I think there was a woolen mill of some sort in Maesycwmmer. Not 100% sure, but I think they made flannel.

Yes, you are correct, in fact the building is still there nestling under the old railway viaduct and possibly more in Hengoed than Maesycwmmer but Factory Road in Hengoed is new to me.  The only Factory Road I know of in the area is in Brithdir Hamlet, between Bargoed and Brithdir.

The woollen mill was known locally as 'The Factory' so maybe one of the roads nearby was previously known as Factory Road?

It appears that the area covers from Gelligaer, Hengoed and Bargoed. Factory Road is that section of road leaving Bargoed before the road divides for Deri or Brithdir/Pontlottyn.  Bridge St and Bristol Terrace are the next streets in the 1881 census.  The trick is to scroll back to page 1 where it will tell you the areas covered by the cesus annd then look for nearbye streets. Yes, there was a woolen mill under the viaduct at Maesycwmmer.

Hi Dannemois,
If my memory is correct Factory Road is the hill that leads up from beneath the railway viaduct, off New Road up to Hengoed Railway Station, I worked this area for many years on the ambulance service, but that was 14 years ago, so maybe a bit rusty.

Interesting comments; there used to be an old saying if you need to find a location ask a policeman, well you could add to that, a postman and an ambulance driver.  Thanks one and all
