Hanley Big Pit Mining Disaster

Hi, I am tracing my family tree and have learnt that my grandfather, John William Griffiths (B: 16-07-1890, D: 17-11-1937) rescued people from the pit. He went in several times and saved lives. He was awarded a medal for this. Has anyone got any info on this at all. i wondered if he would be mentioned anywhere. Would really love to find out more. thank you for reading my post and for your help. Kessy1 :)

There's also a site for the North Staffs Coalfield where researchers have created an index of accidents and have other information on many of the former pits. Both are works in progress.

If your grandfather was awarded the sort of medal that would be in the honours lists these are on the London Gazette website which is free to search:

Otherwise if the medal was local or from, for example, a life-saving society you may find details in a local newspaper. I think Ancestry has some searchable databases for the Sentinel (Stoke based paper) - I don't know the dates.
