Is the clue in a football match?

Could anyone please help me to identify the regiment my relative was serving with around 1892?
On the 1901 census Ellis Wormwell's occupation was given as "Pvte Royal Lancs Reserve". His home address was Colne in Lancashire.
Today I visited Preston Record Office and had quite an emotional time looking at this poor chaps asylum case record (it was awful!). Anyway, in his record (1907)it says that he suffered an injury, playing football whilst "souldiering"  in Ireland (not my spelling can I add!) about 15 years ago.
Had a mess about with Google and found out that The 2nd battalion of the East Lancs Regiment  were in Ireland about this time. (I think they were volunteers - but my military knowledge is not up to much i'm afraid)
Do any of you military experts know if I might be on the right lines here?

I had a look at the Findmypast index for British Army Service Records 1760-1913 and there are two coming up:

Ellis Wormwell, born 1867, Kilbrook Yorkshire
Ellis Wormwell, born 1868, Burnley Lancashire

The second one looks promising.

By ‘ Royal Lancs’ Reserve he almost certainly means that he was a reservist in the King’s Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). Because of the number of regiments with King’s in the title they were invariable referred to as the ‘Royal Lanc’s’. Regulars would enlist for 12 years with the option of spending the last 5 or 6 years in the Army Reserve.

Regarding Ireland the 1st Battalion of the Royal Lanc’s were in Ireland (Curragh Camp) until moving to Aldershot in November 1891. Ancestry will be publishing surviving records for men discharged 1900 to 1913 in the summer - http://www.findmypast.co.uk/media/news/news-item.jsp?doc=CHEP.html

As a Reservist he would receive half-pay in exchange for attending a two-week annual camp, and being available for recall in an emergency. He would also certainly have been recalled in October 1899 for the Boer War.

if the man born 1868 is your man,,then according to the record on FindMyPast he was discharged in 1891 as medically unfit for service.

And he says born in Colne.

Thank you all so much for your helpful replies.
I don't have a subscription for FindMyPast but I'm going to buy a few credits and have a look at these military records.
I have only ever found one person called Ellis Wormwell when doing my research so I would imagine both records would belong to 'my man'.
As a matter of interest Kelbrook  and Colne are very close to each other and would have been interchangeable on various records. Ellis was brought up in Colne.

I think you could be right....the yorkshire one is enlisting as a reserve but refers to earlier service of 5 yrs 346 days (exactly the same)  Also - both men had a tattoo on left forearm.

It clearly says born Yorkshire but I suppose the person filling it in could have mis-understood.

yes both men are one and the same, and he IS my man!
 Kelbrook has changed over the years from both Yorkshire and Lancashire (much to the annoyance of many of the inhabitants!!)

Could be wrong but I believe the East Lanc Regiment 2nd Batt where in various locations in Ireland, including Newry and Sligo.

Do you have a picture of this man by any chance or know if any one else has a picture?
