George Bradley/Bradly b abt 1830 Newbury Berkshire England
« on: Thursday 01 April 10 22:57 BST (UK) »
I am trying to track the birth of George BRADLEY/BRADLY in Newbury Berkshire circa 1830.

Mother and Father unknown. Father maybe Taplin/Joplin. Mother believed to have been in service and was made pregnant there. Believed not to have been married.

I may have just found him in the 1841 census
1841 Census
Name Sex Age Birth Year Occupation Where Born
BRADLY, Mary F 60 1781 Berkshire
BRADLY, Richard M 30 1811 Berkshire
BRADLY, Rachell F 20 1821 Berkshire
BRADLY, George M 9 1832 Berkshire
RG number: HO107 Piece: 33 Book/Folio: 3/17 Page: 28
Registration District: Newbury Union Sub District: Newbury EnumerationDistrict: Ecclesiastical Parish: Civil Parish: Newbury Municipal Borough: Newbury Address: Bartholomew Street, Newbury County: Berkshire

I am trying to find anyone who has/is researching the name in this area, or if anyone has access to the parish records to see if I am on the right track. I believe there is a St Nicholas Church on the road mentioned in the 1841 census but I don't know when it was built or if appropriate for George.

If the parish records are available they may show the birth details for George. :)

Many thanks

St Nicolas was the only church in Newbury in 1830. Sadly the PRs for the period of interest have not been transcribed or indexed - access to filmed originals at the BRO, Newbury Library or any LDS FHC.

Hi Kerryfrater

Have you seen the public tree on Ancestry for George Bradley?   Whoever submitted it shows him as the son of Richard and Rachel (with no source) who appear to be 2 of the ones you found on 1841 Census.   However, I think they have just assumed this from the census - more likely they were brother and sister - on 1851 Census Richard is shown as unmarried!

What's interesting is that someone else has added quite a lengthy narrative about George - how he upped and left his wife and daughters but took his son, also George, with him to Australia, his marriage, his mistress, and they also state he was illegitimate -son of unknown Bradley female and a gardener named Peace?/Pace? who both worked at a big house in the country!     Father's names different to those you mention but has to be the same person surely?

There are also photos posted of both Georges.   Presumably George seniors mother was a sister of Richard and Rachel but no doubt the answer is in the Newbury parish records.

Thank you both for your replies.
I will try and get access to the film through my local library.

The main public tree on ancestry is probably from my public work. I did try and get it removed because there are a number of inaccuracies in it but they wouldn't take it off. This is why I won't subscribe. If they won't take mine off with inaccuracies how many more are there.

A lot of the work was done by a cousin, without the use of computers over many years and I thought complete. Access to census details is opening a few more doors and resulting in new questions. Ever it was.

I am trying to see if the 1841 census details help us identify more closely who George was.

Yes he was a bit of a character. He told his wife that he was taking his son George down to Southampton to see the ships (from Birmingham) and then sailed to Australia with his mistress and daughter. He gained free passage on the boat by booking his mistress in his real wife's name and for her daughter they used one of his real daughter's name. He came back 10 years later. Much to his annoyance his estranged wife arranged a marriage for his son. He lived off the back of his son's earnings and reputedly, when back in Birmingham, was the first to own a motorbike. Not sure if that is true but that is the family story.

Thanks again. We are just stuck with his birth.

It won't be available via a local library - you will need to go to your nearest LDS Family History Centre.
