Lemon Family From Netherlands - Utecht
« on: Thursday 01 April 10 22:37 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have family that originate from Utrecht but I don't know how to trace them in netherlands. I know Ephraim Lemon (Jewish) emigrated here in 1837, however he left some of his children in netherlands. Anyone have any advice

In the Netherlands civil registration started when Napoleon conquered the country, about 1811 or 1812, so you are well into civil registration by 1837. Prior to that there are church records, just like England. Have you looked at GenLias? Do any of yours appear on that? There are also Bevolkingsregisters, but I don't know offhand what date they start. I have one before me at the moment for Wouter van de Waal born 1786, died 1858, so they started before 1858. Also, like Germany, when you went from one town to another, you had to register with the Town Hall. Sometimes it is a problem finding exactly where records are kept. It doesn't seem as easy as England with county record offices. There seem to be layers of Record Offices. I think the top layer is Den Haag. But try GenLias and have you looked at www.meertens.knaw.nl? claytonbradley

OK Mark,

Here are a couple of links of interest for you.

Dutch censuses:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/08ec/

Viewing or searching the censuses may entail a visit to Utrecht (nice town) or the local archives.

Dutch resources online:

http://www.geneaknowhow.net/digi/resources.html

Most importantly of all for you - the Netherlands Society for Jewish Genealogy.

http://www.nljewgen.org/eng/index.html

Select 'Society Publications' from the drop down menu and then click on 'Utrecht'. The publication entitled 'Jewish inhabitants of the province of Utrecht up to 1813, also adoption of surnames' would be the one for you.

That's all for the moment...

Justin
