Hi

Welcome to Rootschat

The marriage to Mary Mullings was in 1827 at St Martin in the Fields Westminster. Robert aged 36 was with Lucy on the 1841 census in Chelsea. She was a widow by 1851. On the 1841 census Robert stated he was born in the county - born in Middlesex. The yes no answer on the 1841 census can be unreliable.

He was buried at St Luke Chelsea on 17th November 1849 aged 43 of Lordship Place. Therefore a birth circa 1806.

How do you know he was born in Southwark Surrey in 1804?

The IGI has two baptism in Southwark for Robert Leatherbys. One in 1805 and one in 1807 to the same parents so it would appear the first child probably died.

Regards

Valda

Valda

Thank you, my error in typing I had his birth as 1805 knowing that his parents were John and Margaret (Lobb) and knowing that his borother John was baptised in 1804 at St Saviour, so knew the family had moved from Devon to London by Robert's birth.

The question I ask is how realiable is the IGI index as I have found on several occasions similar records ie names , dates etc. for other ancestors?

My main research now is on both of his wives, no trace of anything for Maria Mullings, and Lucy I have parents of David and Lucy Jones.

The witnesses for the 1827 marriage were John Mullings and "E Mullings". These names might help track down Maria's origins.

Hi

The IGI is usually good when the entries are extracted from a parish register and reasonable to poor when it is a Mormon church member entering their own research.

Both entries are taken from the parish register

Is this Robert's father or his brother?

Pigot’s Directory of London, 1836
Leatherby John, tailor, 4 Michael's place, Brompton

Also this one's worth looking into:

Post Office Directory of London, 1843
Leatherby Thomas, tailor, 4 Michael's place, Brompton

But possibly a misprint because:

Post Office Directory of London, 1846
Leatherby John, tailor, 4 Michael's place, Brompton
