Darlington Electoral rolls
« on: Wednesday 31 March 10 09:26 BST (UK) »
I am trying to establish when Ralph and Elizabeth Forster moved off Stapleton Grange Farm just south of Darlington, they moved to Darlington in the Haughton area.
They are at Stapleton Grange on the 1911 census, Ralph died 1924 and is buried at St Andrews in Haughton.
Could anyone check the electoral roll for the intervening years to see when they moved
I live in Scotland
Brian

Hi Brian,

The  Parish of Haughton le Skerne was quite extensive and the electoral registers would only contain the parts that were within the Borough boundary. It's a big task searching the registers as they are not indexed and are recorded in much the same way as a census. Do you happen to have an address or location for Ralph from his death/burial?

Was Ralph a farmer or a farm worker? If a farmer, he will most likely be listed in trade directories and much easier to find.

Regards,
Colin

Hi Colin,

Ralph was a farmer at Stapleton Grange, I had thought that this would be the line to check up on as it is a proper address.

I have them in the 1890 trade directory for Stapleton, have also checked phione directories for 1911-1924 but did not find them on that.

I am merely trying to get a closer time frame of when they moved/retired from Stapleton.

The electoral rolls for that date are not online. They are held at the British Library in London and the local Archives may have a copy too.
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Hi Brian,

I'll check the local directories at the library.

I think this may be the place that bred dalmations, but that is a story from my mother so can't confirm it.

Thanks Colin, The Dalmations must have come later because it was a dairy farm at the time of the Fosters.

Hi Brian,

I checked the directories but there was no listing of Ralph Forster (or Foster).

Outlying districts, especially those in the North Riding, usually don't appear in Darlington directories so I thought I might pick him up after he moved, but no joy. My mother's family were at Blackwell at that time and they don't appear either. It's very frustrating.

Regards,
Colin

Thanks Colin,

Many thanks for your time and effort, next time I am down in the area I will go and knock on the door at Stapleton Grange and take the direct approach

Hi Brian,
I've just come across your post whilst doing some research, I'm not sure if you still require the information as this thread is 3 years old. One of Ralph's daughters was born in Eggleston (Durham) in 1885 and the next born at Stapleton Grange in 1888.  The child after that (their son Ralph William Forster) married a (distant) relation of mine.
I live 2 miles from Stapleton so may be able to help if you require any further information.

Hope this helps and hasn't come too late!
Susan
