Searching for any connections and descendants of Ebenezer "Eben" WILKIN, born about 1824 in Ematris parish, and wife Anne JOHNSTON, born about 1838 in Cormoy, Aghabog parish.

Anne JOHNSTON was a daughter of William JOHNSTON of the Mountain Hill near Newbliss and Eliza Jane CALVIN/COLVIN of Creevlea, who married in 1837 at Stonebridge Presbyterian Church, Clones parish, Co. Monaghan. Eliza Jane CALVIN/COLVIN was the daughter of William CALVIN/COLVIN and Anne Jane HADDEN of Creevlea, Clones parish, Co. Monaghan.

Ebenezer WILKIN and Anne JOHNSTON married in 1857 and had children including:

1. Eliza Jane - born about 1859, married a McCONKEY

and these children born after civil registration began in 1864:

2. Joseph - born 1865
3. William - born 1867
4. Thomas - born 1869/1870/1875 (possibly several sons who died young were given the same name)
5. Eben - born 1873
6. John George - born 1877

Ebenezer "Eben" WILKIN of Kinduff died in 1901 at age 77, and his will was probated in 1902.

In the 1911 census, several of the WILKIN families -- including horse dealer Thomas WILKIN, his brother Joseph WILKIN, brother John George WILKIN and their sister Eliza Jane McCONKEY -- were still living in the same part of Co. Monaghan in Newbliss town, Kinduff and Cormoy.

I'll be glad to share more information on the WILKINS, JOHNSTONS and CALVINS/COLVINS, and would appreciate any information on relatives and descendants.

Annie

Thanks so much for your post! It's good to know that your father recalled "Eben Wilkin" -- showing that those families were still around several decades ago, and not just long long ago. Anything else your father used to say about the Wilkins would be helpful if you recall more and want to share it.

I've seen a half dozen Wilkins listed in today's telephone directory, including at Rockcorry, but haven't yet contacted them (I live 4000 miles away in Alabama and am doing the most research I can by long-distance). I think letters to those Wilkins in the Newbliss-Rockcorry area of Co. Monaghan today would be helpful, and perhaps one of them will answer.

I'd love to find the other Johnston children who grew up at the Mountain Hill, besides Anne who married Ebenezer Wilkin in 1857. The Johnstons and Wilkins were Protestant, they were farmers and horsemen, and they have MANY cousins who emigrated to the U.S., Canada, Australia, England, and other countries. Any additional suggestions are always appreciated!

Thanks again,
Annie

Greaghglass,

You're so helpful! I really appreciate learning about the Wilkins there in Co. Monaghan today. Would you have time to write me at my regular email address, so I can tell you more of the local families and relatives I'm looking for? I have several older cousins living near Clones but they don't have computers and email, and letters asking them things are almost never answered (I have to call them by telephone and they're not much better on the phone, either!). I'm (*) (in case this board doesn't let us put a full email address). Can't seem to find any young cousins who're interested in family history!

Yes, some of these families were Church of Ireland, and when I was in Co. Monaghan in 2006 we took photos of Norris cousins' graves at Aghabog Ch. of Ireland, also Allens at Newbliss Presbyterian. My Calvins/Colvins farmed at Creevlea near Stonebridge, and some were buried at Clones Church of Ireland in early 1800s as well as at Stonebridge Presbyterian. My cousin-by-marriage Gerald Mackarel (not on computer/email) has a landscape/garden center at Gransha. Cousin Willie Norris is a farmer at Crappagh (not on computer/email).

Thanks, and hope you have time to write!
Annie
