Argyle St, Motherwell - any ideas?
« on: Tuesday 30 March 10 20:18 BST (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone have any idea where this street was? It' given as an address on the 1891 census. It's listed as being in the Dalziel parish and 2 of the male occupants (including the head of house) were coal miners.

Thanks

Hi Julz,

The National Library of Scotland website [nls.uk - under digital collections] has some old maps, but not one that I can see which provides details of streets in Motherwell.  There is a commercial 'old maps' site which can also be good for pinpointing old locations, but I've had a look there and can't see Argyle Street either.

The best bet might be to contact Motherwell Heritage Centre to see if they have any old maps of Motherwell.  Their details are here:

http://www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=15875

Depending on where you're based, you might be able to pop in.  If not give them a phone to see if they can help.  If they confirm that they have the maps, but can't send you a copy I might be able to pop in the week after next, as I am not too far away.

Let us know how you get on!

Best wishes

I knew Argyle Street well, some of my schoolfriends lived there. It has long gone I'm afraid. It was a small dead-end street off Park Street, opposite the main entrance to Colville's steel works. The main Glasgow-London railway line was at the end of the street, it was a large cul-de-sac really, with tenements on either side. One of the buildings was called Grieve's Land, my great-grandfather lived there.
If you tell me the name of your ancestor I'll check if the family were there in the 1911 street directory.

Thanks guys.

Lodger - that's great thanks. I thought it could be around there as they lived on Leslie St for a time. The name was Rooney (Patrick and Maria) and their lodger John Lennon. I think they probably were on Leslie St by 1911 going by various docs.

Cheers

In the 1911 directory Mrs Maria Rooney is at 14 Leslie Street, no sign of Patrick. In the 1922-25 directory Patrick Rooney, contractor at 14b Leslie Street, also an H Rooney at that address and a J Rooney at 43 Leslie St.

Thanks Lodger, that's great.

I think Patrick may have been in America around then (for poor folks they went back and forth like yo-yos!!). H Rooney was probably Honora - Patrick's mother. No J's so far so will have a look into that

Thank you.

Hi long shot I know but I am researching David and Jane Paterson who lived in Argyle Street, Grieves land in the 1891 census. They are the parents of James Paterson b 1898 (Jane died 6 months after he was born and David remarried an Annie McKenzie in 1900). I noticed one of your research names was paterson, would David be your great grandfather?
