Cotton St, Ashton under Lyne

I have just managed to track down the death certificate for my mother's grandfather. At the time he died he had been living with one of his sons at 148 Cotton Street. My mum also stayed with them for a while at the beginning of the war when children were being evactuated from Glasgow.

I would like to know if Cotton Street, and any old building, is still there. I have had a look at Google Maps and can see that today there is a Cotton St East and West. Can anybody here point me in the direction of an old map or historical information for the area? I have found a website with fabulous photos of old cotton mills, but unfortunately I have no idea of what my mum's uncle worked as, or what took him to Ashton under Lyne in the first place.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cotton Street went from the town centre to Richmond Street and was mostly demolished in the 1960's when they built high rise flats  and masonettes in the area. The development  cut across the street so they renamed the bit near the town centre Cotton Street East and the bit near Richmond Street  Cotton Street West.

Tameside Local Studies and Archives Centre is a newly built facility on Cotton Street in Ashton and in 2006 Maureen Burns ran a Cotton Street Working Group.

She wrote an article in our Local History Forum's Magazine History Alive Tameside about a Peep into Cotton Street.  It is on page 38 of this on-line PDF version of the magazine:

What a great article! Thank you so much for that, Nouchke. I can't wait to show my Mum the photo of the houses to see if she recognises them as the same type. Good newsletter too. I have picked up a couple of bits of useful information from it.
