Fox - Pioneering Photographers in Bradford
« on: Tuesday 30 March 10 12:30 BST (UK) »
I have an ancestral pair of cousins Alfred E. and Christopher Fox in business in Bradford from about 1879 as Photographers. Both married women from Lincolnshire. In the case of Alfred E. both his first and second wives came from South Lincolnshire. I can't make the Lincs connection. I would also be interested in any information on their firm A.E. & C Fox, Photographers.

The Fox cousins wives were Rosa Blanche Lacey, from Boston, Lincs who married Alfred E.  in Mar1879 in Bradford; Mary Ann Wright, from Langrick, Lincs who was Alfred's second marriage in Dec 1883, in Bradford; Sophia Pickering from Butterwick, Lincs married Christopher Fox in Boston in Dec 1883.

The Lincolnshire link here intrigues me - anyone have anything on these family lines ?

Hi and welcome to rootschat.

The Bradford Library could almost certainly point you to where you can find out more about the photographers and where/when they had their studios etc.

I dont know anything about the family lines but it seems they had 3 studio's. I have a picture of some of my ancestors who lived in bradford and on the back of the photo the studio's listed are :-

1.Bridge Street, Bradford
2.Southend, Elland
3.Station Lane, Heckmondwike

It's a very nice photo!  :)
Good luck with your hunt for the Lincolnshire connection.

Thanks Charlotte and Hollie -
If I can get round the technology - I'll post one of the photos of the Holden sisters of Austwick, nieces to the Fox photographer cousins. I understand that Ken from Bradford FHS has done some work on photographers in Bradford, and there's a copy of his monograph in Bradford Library. Going to have a look ...

The Lincolnshire Girls may well have come to Bradford in domestic service, in the influx of people from rural areas finding work in what then, was a marvellous, rich, thriving Industrial City.

Hi again, If the Ken you mention from Bradford FHS is the one I think he is, his written material will be excellent.

Hope you get some answers to your questions and let us know how you get on please.
