Andrew Spillard / Elizabeth Tilling
« on: Tuesday 30 March 10 08:06 BST (UK) »
These two were my great-great grandparents, marrying in London in 1849 and emigrating to New Zealand in 1851. Andrew was born in Holborn, London in 1815 (son of Andrew Spillard and Sarah Francis) and Elizabeth born 1830 (daughter of George Tilling).

I am looking for anyone who can help with information about either these Spillard or Tilling families. I have quite a bit of knowledge after they arrive in New Zealand, but am keen to know more about their lives and my ancestry here in the UK.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you Louisa. I did have most of that information but that is as far as it goes. Have looked on ancestry but tracking birth records prior to 1837 is difficult. And there seem to be many arms of Spillards and Tillings. Part of my desire is to establish heritage for both, but specifically, to understand on the Spillard side whether any of Andrew's brothers also emigrated to either NZ or Australia. There are a few families of Spillard in NZ and it would be good to understand whether they were related or not.

Many thanks

Many thanks Louisa for that flood of information! I think you sent a second load as I was thanking you for the first. Huge thank you once again.

I do believe all that information belongs to my branch of the family. Fascinating to know that I have an arm of the family that traces back a good way in London itself. All other arms of the family were also pioneering types, emanating mostly from Bradford in Yorkshire, with one from the Isle of Grain in Kent.

On that marriage of Andrew Spillard to Mary Waltho in 1844, was that information you gave of the father being James Stone Sawyer the name of the presiding church person? I ask as I would assume Mary Waltho would have a father with the Waltho surname as well.

On the birth of Mary Ann Spillard to Andrew & Mary, I believe that is their daughter. Certainly has all the credentials but what would appear to be a two-month pregnancy. However, it happened in those days too. And the name of Mary Ann is the same as my great grandmother, also a Mary Ann Spillard, born in New Zealand in 1863.

Sorry, Mary's father was James Walto a stone sawyer.

Unfortunately there seems to be quite a lot of Paddington 1841 that is missing, so the chances are you won't find them in Paddington on 1841, mine are all missing from Padd 1841, most frustrating

Hi Louisa

Thanks for clearing up that fundamental booboo of mine. Brain appears to not be fully engaged!

Yes, I did try and find information on the 1841 census but there was nothing. You have explained probably why that is so. And it was no good looking for them in 1851 as they sailed to New Zealand that year. And not with little Mary Ann I might add. It was just the two of them. Need to check the bdm to see if she had died or perhaps been left with the mother's family to be brought up.

Just out of interest, do you too have Spillard or Tilling family? Or have you just been a particularly kind person helping me along?

Cheers for now
