Yorkshire to France, then back to England

Cant work out why GG grandparents went to France sometime between 1871 and 1891, then came back to England.  GG grandfather was a Yorkshireman from the Huddersfield area who worked as a mechanic according to one of the census'.  Any ideas out there?

My ggrandparents done the same they were from Staffordshire & 4 of their children were born in France.

If you google Industrial Revelution you might find your answers on a site as I did, I realise that there was plenty of work for them.

What kind of mechanic was he?  Building of Eiffel Tower 1887-89 and Paris Exposition may have some bearing?

I've got a similar case.  They nipped over to Fontainebleau around 1872 and were there at least long enough for a son to be born.  They were in service, so I'm guessing the family they worked for were in France, but I don't know.  I'm just now going  painstakingly through the census records....which aren't alphabetical  If you know where in France they were, AND if that Department and Commune has digitised their records, you could look through the census -- they're every five years, more or less, and usually quite easy to read (if you need a hand translating the column headings, just shout out).  The tricky bit is knowing what area to look in.

Thanks for that ozcanucka, I hadnt thought of the French census. Ive been trying to figure out why they went there for so long.  I just leave it alone for a while and then go back to it.

I am research my family as well:

Selina Stirrup born in "Fra, British Subject, Lille" around 1842.  This was only child born there, went back to England prior to heading to America in 1855.   Cannot find birth cert, or info on this part of France, and why says"british subject".   Can any one shed some light on this part of history?

If the father of a child born overseas was British, the child automatically had British citizenship.

What was the occupation of Selina's father? I think there was quite a bit of iron-working around that area.

 - shows in Lille (tables décennales, which are indexes of bmds) a Celina F?? Stirrup, registered 28 Mai 1841. She seems to be the only birth there. I didn't check for marriages or deaths.
