My Great Grandfather was a publican at the Lord Nelson Inn in Horncastle in 1907, it is the building that is now the Post Office.

He died soon afterwards but I know absolutely nothing about him apart from his name Henry Hunt and his fathers name William, from his marriage certificate, I would guess that he might have been born 1870's.

Does anyone know of a resource somewhere that has more information on Publicans in that time frame so I can hopefully know more about him and be able to identify him in the census'.

Thanks

Dave

The Nelson Hotel, on the same side of the Market Place, was formerly kept by an old man named Vesey, who was said to have been, in his earlier years, a great smuggler on the coast, but coming to Horncastle, he reformed, and was appointed constable.  The sign of this inn is a portrait of the great hero of Trafalgar and the Nile, originally well painted by the artist, Northouse, but it has recently been repainted in the worst style, and almost “improved” out of recognition.

The George stood on the sites now occupied by the Post Office

my grandmother who was 2 years old at the time

Does anybody have a copy of your grandmothers birth cert to confirm her fathers name?

As she was so young when her mother died - was any other family member called Charles?

When you have the marriage details from your cousin - you can check the age against the entries I showed above from the 1901 census index

The 1901 has a Henry  Hunt unmarried aged 27 b Southwick Hampshire who was a licensed Victualler at the Golden Lion in Southwick

Was Henry a bachelor when he married as there is another entry for a Henry Hunt b 1869 Bethnal Green Beer & wine house keeper but he was married to Alice - no children

Also - Henry Hunt 35 Brewer b Birmingham - single

I have a copy of my granmothers birth certificate it states his name was Henry.  She also called her son, my Uncle Harry which would indicate that she named him after her father.

To be honest I think the Publican link may have been a red herring.

I was hoping that someone might know about the pub and where I might find out more information on the landlords so I might be able to identify him better.

I think my cousin has made a fundemental mistake in attaching herself to the wrong family, the one in Wootton, Lincolnshire.

I think that this Henry and his family were canal boatmen (as he was described as a boatman in his wifes death certificate) who as a result of changes in the way we transported goods had to find another trade, ran a pub for a short time until his wife contracted TB.

There are three certificates that would help me, Henry's birth and death certificates, but cant find any candidates. There is a Henry Hunt born Leeds in 1877 but his father was not called William.

There is also a birth certificate for another daughter Gladys Hunt I was told he had who must have been born bet 1904 and 1906 but I cannot find her, there are a couple of Gladys in the 1911 census, if these are her she must have been brought up as someont elses daughter.  I was told she married someone called Wilson.  What happened to her I dont know as I never met her and she was never spoken about.
