Publican in Horncastle in 1907
« on: Sunday 28 March 10 19:08 BST (UK) »
My Great Grandfather was a publican at the Lord Nelson Inn in Horncastle in 1907, it is the building that is now the Post Office.

He died soon afterwards but I know absolutely nothing about him apart from his name Henry Hunt and his fathers name William, from his marriage certificate, I would guess that he might have been born 1870's.

Does anyone know of a resource somewhere that has more information on Publicans in that time frame so I can hopefully know more about him and be able to identify him in the census'.

Thanks

Dave

He died soon afterwards
How soon afterwards?  Pre or post 1911?

If he was still alive in 1911 - have you looked for him on the 1911 census?  It is pay per view but will give you his  birthplace

The marriage cert should tell you his age which will give his birthyear

Who did he marry - Ruth Foston, Fanny Gindern or  Mary Isabel White

What was his fathers occupation on the marriage cert

The 1901 has a Henry  Hunt unmarried aged 27 b Southwick Hampshire who was a licensed Victualler at the Golden Lion in Southwick

Was Henry a bachelor when he married as there is another entry for a Henry Hunt b 1869 Bethnal Green Beer & wine house keeper but he was married to Alice - no children

Also - Henry Hunt 35 Brewer b Birmingham - single

His marriage certificate will not necessarily give his age.....are you assuming he married in 1907, Carole?

Dave, if you post all the information you have from the marriage certifcate, including witnesses and occupations, it will give us more to go on.

I have found a few deaths of Henry Hunts in Lincolnshire shortly after 1907, but they are all quite old.
This might mean that he married later in life, or indeed twice??

There is a Henry Hunt on the 1901 census with father William & mother Elizabeth living in Wootton Lincs. His birth year was c1874.....could this be him?

There is a freebmd marriage entry for 1907 - see my reply above.

Either 1907 was his marriage year or the info re: his occupation came from a child's birth cert in 1907

Thanks for your responses so far.  I know about the Henry Hunt in Wootton, I cant see that this farm labourer would be running a pub a few years earlier. Though my cousin is convinced it is him.

His wife Ann Maria Parker died in 1908, my grandmother who was 2 years old at the time went to live with her grandmother.  Henry just disappeared.

I am working on the assumption that he died as that is what I have been told. It is interesting that on his wifes death certificate (a death which he did not register) his occupation was called a boatman not a publican.  His age suggests that he was born c 1877.
