Thankyou so much. This is great information! The graveyard in Dungiven will be well worth a visit especially as one of my greatgreatgrandfathers was a McKay from Maine!! (That's for another day)

I have just been in touch with a family member who said that Thomas James Fulton's family owned a large farm near Tartnakelly (where the Hemphills lived). I have found another Fulton family living at Tartnakelly so perhaps this family is connected in some way. Some more research will be needed to try to establish a link.

I was also told that the son of Thomas James and Mina Fulton inherited the Hemphill farm at Tartnakelly.

Thankyou aghadowey for the information re marriage certificates. It is worth then always checking the church records, if they exist, as they may give additional information.

I am the great grand daughter of Thomas James Fulton married to Wilhelmena Hemphill in 1918. My Grand mother and parents still live in the town land of Ballynacree. What else would you like to know?

I had a flying visit to Dungiven Parish Church burial ground last week hoping to find more about the McCays. Do you know if there are any other McCay headstones in this graveyard?

I am wondering, kingskerswell, if you know who the parents of Lt Thomas Fulton McCay were and where the information came from re his grandparents.

Cyclamen,
I have a list of all the burials in the graveyard so I will have a look. Lt. McCay's parents were William McCay and Martha Quigley who married in Dungiven Presbyterian Church in 1882. Martha's parents were John Quigley and Margaret Fulton who married in Dungiven Presbyterian Church in 1855. Lt. McCay was born in Drum. He had attended Foyle College in Londonderry and was studying at Trinity College Dublin when he enlisted. As well as being commemorated on the Limavady War Memorial he is also commemorated on a plaque in Dungiven Presbyterian Church.

Many thanks for this additional information.

I would be very grateful if you could check for any other McCays/McKays in this graveyard.

Cyclamen,
Sorry for the delay; I have tidied my notes and documents and cannot find anything easily.
The burials for McCay/McKay, taken from an unofficial gravediggers' record book are:-

22 May 1879 William McCay of Drum, age 77
8   July  1884 Mary Ann McCay, Drum, age 76
21 Nov 1913  William McKay                age 72
Nov 1917 Thomas Fulton McCay, killed in France age 22
20 May 1923 Martha McCay age 67
10 Jan 1924 John McCay      age 37
29 Oct 1929 John McCay      age 77
22 Sept 1937 William Joseph Stevenson McCay age 44
9 Oct 1966 David George Douglas McCay Drum
7 Feb 1984 Ellie McKay, Drum, age 78

This could probably be improved to give relationships by sighting the actual headstones.

That was quick!! Very many thanks for this.

I will go back to the graveyard when I am not quite so pushed for time. I did notice that many of the headstones are virtually unreadable but as you say I may glean a little more.

I've been doing a little research into a Fulton family from Derrylane, Drum. A James Fulton married to Jane Scott. James's father was called Thomas.
If you look up the previous discussed marriage of Joseph Fulton to Elizabeth Fulton, Joseph's father is also called Thomas.
Also the marriage of John Quigley to Margaret Fulton, Margaret's father is also called Thomas.
I also found the marriage of a James  McCully to a Martha Fulton of Drum, again Martha's father was called Thomas.
It's maybe just a coincidence, that the name of father of  these Fultons, from the same area, was the same , or maybe they were all  siblings, although the difference in marriage dates makes it a little unlikely.
Going back to the McCay connection, I think a son of  James called Thomas Robert Fulton, married a Margaret McCay from Drum in 1909. Thomas and Margaret had a daughter called Martha Quigley Fulton.

Thankyou very much for your input. Some of this information is new to me. I have found a considerable number of Fulton marriages which took place in and around Dungiven and the Limavady area and it is going to take some time to sort the different families out.

Scotts and McCullys also married into the Hemphill family of Tartnakelly. If you wish to contact me through the PM system I may be able to give you additional information.
