Williams family
« on: Sunday 28 March 10 02:45 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I am trying to find information out on my grandfathers family.

My grandfather was Thomas William Williams born in Sydney in 1906.

His Father was Edward Williams (I think his middle name was William as well). He was born somewhere in Wales. possibly in Abergavenny (my father believes we come from that area). I dont know if there is a village or something called 'Trevellyn', but he named a house that he lived in Sydney by that name, so it is possible that he came from a village of that name, or lived on a farm of that name

He emigrated to Australian in the 1890s (after marrying Mary Evalina Hobbs).

He was a Gardener by trade.

I know this is not a great deal of information, and I apologise for that, but I would love any help if you could..

cheers,

Nicola

Hi Nicola

I suspect the place was Trevethin, which is not too far from Abergavenny.

Have you got the marriage certificate?

Marriage

Sep quarter 1892

HOBBS MARY Evelina
WILLIAMS Edward

Brentford Vol 3a Page 77

The cert should give Edward and Mary's fathers' names and occupations - and this information will be vital to tracing Edward back, given how "popular" the surname WILLIAMS is!

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

p.s. do you have immigration/ shipping records or any indication of Edward's age?

I have a link to the certificate (below)

http://search.ancestry.com.au/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=1623&path=Ealing.St+Mary%2c+Acton.1892.8&sid=&gskw=Mary+Evelina+Hobbs

I am having trouble reading the writing as to where Edwards address is.. His father's name is also Edward williams, and is a labourer. can you help?

it looks like the address for Mary Evalina is something like 142 .... Road, Acton

No, sorry - I don't have access to the link you've provided.

What does it say about ages?

Will have a look for Ed son of Ed in the right area!

This chap looks promising in 1881 - try the following reference for Abergavenny

RG11/ 5232/ 59/1

He's a gardener, non domestic and the son of Edward and Mary Ann - aged 18 on this census, so around 29 when he married.  Born Raglan, Monmouthshire.  There's a brother William thrown in for no extra charge!

What do you think?

p.s. just up the road is a retired farmer, Thomas WILLIAMS - shouldn't jump to any conclusions, but your grandfather might have been named after his grandfather ..

Ah that answers one question then - they weren't together in the same household in 1891.

Nicola - was Edward previously married (is he a widower on his marriage cert)?

I am having trouble locating him in 1891.

I dont think he was previously married. at least, there are no family stories of such an event.

is Llanvihangel Gobion, Monmouth near Abergavenny?

Edward Williams jnr, born abt 1863 had travelled to Australia to work for the Macarthur-Onslow family as their gardener (very old and influential family in Australia). He then returned to the UK, married Mary Evalina (they must have known each other before he went) and then emmigrated to australia where they started their family. I dont think he would appear in the 1891 census or any after that. Iam guessing that they emigrated in late 1891 early 1892 thereabouts as their eldest son was born in Australia in 1892

thanks arranroots and osprey...

Umm if you have the right marriage, they emigrated after their marriage in mid-1892.

I wonder whether Edward was in Oz in 1891 then - that would explain why I can't find him!  Maybe you need to have another look at shipping records?

You haven't answered my question about his age - from the cert - as should his marital status.

Llavihangel Gobion is just over 5 miles from Abergavenny - see if this works:

Map Here

Remember though that Abergavenny was the registration and administrative district for the area.
