gro showing no first name on birth cert
« on: Friday 26 March 10 13:05 GMT (UK) »
Looking at gro index for birth cert dated around 1946 , I see a few examples including one that may be of interest to me where a certificate is issued showing mother and fathers name , the sex of the child and place date etc but no first name.
Is this possibly a death after birth or a child being put up for adoption ? Or just a cock up on the part of the indexers?

The Registration Acts required the registration of a Birth, and a name was not necessary.

That would make things difficult for the child in the future ?

when a name is given to it, the parent or guardian of such child, or other person procuring such name to be altered, or given, may, within twelve months next after the registration of the birth, deliver to the registrar or superintendent registrar such certificate as herein-after mentioned, and the registrar or superintendent registrar, upon the receipt of that certificate, and on payment of the appointed fee, shall, without any erasure of the original entry, forthwith enter in the register book the name mentioned in the certificate as having been given to the child, and having stated upon the certificate the fact of such entry having been made, shall forthwith send the certificate to the Registrar General, together with a certified copy of the entry of the birth with the name so added.

If you were looking at a transcription of the GRO Index, then you should try to see the image of the page to confirm there was no first name given and not simply a transcription error.

Stan has pointed out that an amendment can be made at a later date, but this should also be recorded in the Index in the quarter it was amended. As this is a fairly modern record with mother's maiden name included, I doubt if there was an amendment, but you may not have checked beyond the expected year.

Regards,
Colin
