My grandmother Mary Eliza Rafferty & her sister Agnes were in Mullers Orphanage in Bristol from 1891 to 1905 and 1901 resp. (given numbers of 8157 & 8158) Said it was OK, food spartan though. You can get copies of admittance records, next of kin, etc. from Mullers for about £25.00.

I was in Mullers Orphanage, later changed to Ashley Down Orphanage, from 1933, at the age of five, until 1942.
Only one of the homes was used as an orphanage during the war, the Bristol cricket ground and the homes that overlook the ground were first used as a Navy training barracks, and later by the US army.
It was a rotten place to be in, surrounded by a wall like a prison. Allowed visits only on the first Monday of the month for two hours. I never had visits anyway.
It was worse for the girls, they were kept there until they were seventeen working in the various departments. The boys left at fourteen, and were sent to works on farms or some other job if they had no relative ti go to.
The last home to go was on the left side of Ashley Down Road, coming from the main Gloucester Road. This was No.3 and during the war housed the senior boys & girls. I don't know what happened to the little ones.

My grandfather, his brother and step-sister entered Muller's the year before Muller died in 1897.  Only just had contact with the granddaughter of my great uncle, as she had been looking for us.  Muller's sent my grandfather to Wales to work the farms there and that is where he met my grandmother, also an orphan
