Weavers Arms, Cockermouth
« on: Thursday 25 March 10 04:32 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know of any websites containing info about old pubs?  I have John Bigrigg who was the Inn keeper of the Weavers Arms
during the 1871 Census.  I would love to find out if there are any references to this pub anywhere.  He was also listed as Inn Keeper during the 1851 & 1861 Census, althought the name of the establishment was not listed.

Wasn't always the weavers arms but if you go to www.historicaldirectories.org then to search by location, cumberland and in 1847 and 1873 (1 is a post office directory) and in the search box put weavers, you will find that John was the landlord with an address 96 Main St. You may find him in other directories on this site.

John Bigrigg was my 4 times back Grandad. The Weavers Arms was demolished in 1873 to make Bridge Street.  He was the landlord up to the end, when he was well into his 70's

Delighted to hear from you NANNIEANN  :)  My posting was so long ago I wasn't expecting any more replies.  Which of John & Margaret's children are you descended from?

Hi Helen,  John and Margaret's son Jonathon (b1826) to his son Jonathon (b1854) to his daughter Bella (b 1897) to her daughter Edna (b 1919) who was my Mother.  I was born 1946 and was adopted out of the area.  I found my real family in 1983, but sadly had missed Edna by 6 months, however I found 2 sisters, Pat died a few years ago but Renne still lived in Cockermouth.   Are you related in any way, if so, do you know much about the family history, I am researching it at the moment. Apparently I was the image of Edna.  I have 2 children and 4 grandchildren whom all seem to have the Bigrigg genes.  Regards Ann

Hi again NANNIEANN, I am not related, my husband is.  His great grandmother was Mary Ann (1868) daughter of Jonathan & Sarah (nee Sherlock) Bigrigg.  She was their 8th child, the others being Isabella (1849), John (1851), Jonathan, Margaret Jane (1857), Elizabeth (1859), Sarah Ann(1861), William (1868).  I have 5 children born to Bella & Thomas, is that correct?
I'd be happy to help with any info you need.  :)
