Hello,

I am tracing an ancestor JOHN FIDLER who was married to ELIZABETH DOBB. They married in Nottinghamshire, but on the census for 1901 John states his birthplace as CATHIFFE, DERBYSHIRE. There is no mention of him in 1881 (his supposed birth year) nor in 1891, when he should have been at least 12 years old. Is Cathiffe an actual place in derbyshire, or did the scribe mistake it for another place? Is there any mention of a john fidler on the birth records? Please any help would be great.

Hi,John Fidler may not be in 1881 as he may have been born later in the yearthan the census.

If you bought his marriage cert you'd find his father's occupation and this may give a clue about where his childhood was spent- eg if father was in the army John may have been born overseas.  It's a long shot but could be one way to go if you don't get this resolved  another route.

there is a john fidler on the 1881 census gives birthplace as catcliffe,yorkshire he is living in derbyshire with parents william/elizabeth but his birthdate is down as 1877

he is still with his parents in 1891 in nottinghamshire parish of skegby reg dist of mansfield now still gives same birthplace as 1881

the family are living in hucknall under huthwaite,nottinghamshire in 1901 but john is not there

During my research for my wife's family I came across a John Fidler who I think matches the one you were researching.I don't know if you managed to get all the information you wanted. It is a long time since your post which I only came across today. I have in my possession a photo of John's children. Lizzie,Emma,May,Florie,Rosamund,Patti,Willie. I understand he had also at least 4 more children not in this photo,namely Robert,John,James,Hannah and Ruth.
I think John was known as Jack.I have another photo of son Willie (Bill) who died at age 19.On this photo it states Uncle Jack's,Elizabeth Dobb Fidler son William died 19 years of age. I also have the death record of his son John at age 4 months.
I also have the newspaper cutting of John (seniors) death which names all the mourners including a number of the Dobb family.
John's sister Martha Fidler married a Charles Edwards which is where my wife's family line took me.
