Prince Risborough Gas Works
« on: Wednesday 24 March 10 13:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am looking for any information at all on the Gas Works in Princes Risborough. I know that it opened up in 1862 and closed in 1960. My ancestor John Bunce was the manager there on the 1871 census, and also lived there with his wife and children. Although he was born in Bucks, on all the other census' and records I have on him he lived in Oxfordshire after his marriage. He was a Coach smith on all other records. I am trying to find out how and why he went from coach smith to manager of a gas works and then why he left to return to his previous occupation. Also why he moved back to Bucks and then returned to Oxon again. Also any other information on the gas works such as location or pictures would be most welcomed.
Many thanks in advance!

Hi,

As to the move from Bucks to Oxon, the border of the two counties is very close to Princes Risborough.

In Bucks you have Princes Risborough, Aylesbury and West Wycombe.
In Oxon you have Chinnor, Thame and Stokenchurch.

Quite a few of my relatives have migrated between the two counties for work purposes.

I am new to this but have found out that John and Mary Bunce are my great, great grandparents. I am starting to build our family tree too.

All I can tell you is that the Gas works were down the Longwick Rd, out of Princes Risborough, and to the left before the railway bridge approx half a mile down the road.
