bower family living at hartley west farm

Hi all, just wondering if anyone can help me please.  My research has led me to a grave stone in St albans church yard in earsdon.  It is for john and elizabeth bower and a few of their children. John was my 5 X Great grand father.  It says they were farmers at hartly west farm and they appear to own it from info on 1851 census. 

Does anyone know where i can get some more info on this please??

I am hoping it will lead me to some very interesting finds.

I hope someone clever out there can help me please.

I may be wrong and am willing to be corrected, but I suspect that they were tenant farmers.  Most of the farms in that area were, and still are, part of the Delaval estate - part of which has recently been acquired by the National Trust.  I know that Northumberland Archives at Woodhorn has material from the Delaval estate but I don't have any exact details as to what it contains.

On the 1851 census it says John is a 'farmer of 200 acres, 5 labourers'

But it doesn't say that he owned the land.

To back this up, Whellan's Directory of 1855 http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/d.asp states that 'the Delavel family acquired possession of the entire Manor (i.e. of Hartley) and it is now the property of Lord Hastings' (of Seaton Delaval)

 10 april 1874 earsdon marriage of Mary Elizabeth, eldest dtr of late William Bower of Hartley West Farm

 7 Mar 1879 Auction by Moses Pye of what looks like all animals and implements from the farm  " in default of rent"

14 Sep 1883. Results of Seaton delaval and New Hartley Floral and Horticultural Society. H Gillespie of Hartley west Farm won a second prize.

Mrs Bower of Seaton Delaval won "Best Pound of Butter"  W.Bower won prizes in both Floral and Vegatable classes.

Lord Hastings and party popped into the show.

Just found this posting and hope that saltandpepper will respond. 

I've just discovered that John Bower was my 4 x GGF.  I guess that makes us something like second cousins a zillion times removed?

It may be that, since your posting last year, you've managed to gather a fair bit of info.  However, I'm local to Hartley West Farm and might be able to help.

In any event, this is only the second time that I've come across other relatives, and a first within an on-line forum!  Excited!
