My great Uncle Jimmy .. presumably under the name James Delaney .. was rumoured to play for Accrington Stanley.

I will modify this post when I can get a few more details .. it would have been pre second world war.

May I have a lookup too please?

We have a photograph of the Workington Association Football Club in 1905/1906 and on it is a Grand Uncle but can only make out the name SMITH and not the initial.

We have been told that a Grand Uncle - Joseph Stanley SMITH (born 1881) - was a professional footballer and wondered if it could be him?

Can you see if he is mentioned pleased and any other SMITH's playing for Workington - could be Thomas William (born 1872)? It would be pre WW1.

Nearest that I can find is a Joseph Stanley (Joe) Smith , b. Keswick. Played Outside Left.

1904 - played for Burnley

I don't see Thomas Willam.

Was Workington in the Football League then - I'm not sure

That's him! Born Keswick, yes! 

Not sure about Workington being in the League either but couldn't remember the name of the team Joseph played professionally for except it began with "B"!
