Thanks Simon - I appreciate your time.
This is a real mystery - it is my husband's grandfather, and family folk lore has always said he played for PNE and Liverpool, but he died years ago.  My husband has always accepted the story, particularly since he remembers going to a testimonial at Deepdale as a child with his grandfather and being introduced to Tom Finney!  I thought I would try to find out the facts ..... but it seems there aren't any!!
Thanks for looking!

United

All is not lost yet, if he didn't make a first team appearance, then I wouldn't have the information.

I will speak to the club historian/archivist

Hi United

This is a puzzler, between Gadget and myself we can normally find players.

Liverpool did have a William Stevenson play for them, but not untill 1962

You're doing a grand job, Simon, and I've come to the same conclusion as you - he might not have played for the first team. My book only lists those who've played in a League game  :-\

I have two books that list PNE first teamers, but one has loads more info.  I looked at team club photo's from WWI to the end of WWII, but nothing.  I found one photo with 32 players on it (1928), I didn't know they had squads that big then  ??? ???

Not really sure about the average size of clubs in those days, Simon.

I do have the history of that Chirk AFC club that many of my ancestors and wider kin group played for before moving on to bigger clubs. Nearly half of the Welsh side came from there are one stage  8)  During the 1920s and 1930s  they did seem to have signed up quite a lot of players.

It could be that some of the 32 players were semi-professional. I know that my Dad was for a time before he went full time.

Much as I would like it to be - that is much too late for someone born in 1906 ...!!
Maybe he did just play for the reserves - if he played at all.
Maybe it will just be another family myth shot down in flames ......!!
I do appreciate the trouble you are taking ...!

Hi

Do you have a John Edward Pollard listed as playing for Aylesbury, would be very late 40's up to March 1950?

Thank you
