Thanks Gadget but that's intrigueing!

The Stoke, Wolves dates agree with what we were expecting but I have approx dates of birth-death as 1881-1912. 

I wonder if they could have mixed him up with someone else.

Or have we got the wrong one  ???

The birth date is fairly close - all it says is d. 1954. I think they used various sources - including what people told them.

Well I didn't know until I heard the roaring in the background before, I don't follow it myself sorry ::)

I didn't even know who was playing, I sorted through some old letters etc while it was on.  I don't know if you'll find Robert, but that's the story about him - the only Groggins who became professional.  It could be a bit of a Chinese whisper of course, and he could have been a greensman or whatever they call the men who mow the lawn/pitch ;D

No sign of your Robert but I don't think Carlisle Utd were in the Football League at that time:

Hiya Gadget,

Can you check out James Sharples, I know he played for Swindon circa 1898-1900 and Wigan , but I think he also played for Millwall and maybe a few others. I think he was a prolific goal scorer.
