Royal Marines Engineers Record

Can someone please help me decifer my grandfathers service record in the Royal Marine Engineers, where he was and what he might be doing there?

HBL RME 12 Sep 45 - 13 Nov 45
Ports DW 14 Nov 45 - 20 Jan 46

I have been told that he was involved in Bomb Disposal at one time and also that he spent some time in New Zealand (perhaps bet 1942 and 1945)

Hi,
I have just received my father's Service Records and am having trouble working out exactly where he was during the war. I googled RME Det 410 and found the link to your request for information. Were you able to find out anything more? I believe Det 410 was to Australia, as I know my father was in Sydney at this time.

The book "Nothing Much to Lose" I received and is totally unrelated to what I know about my father's time in the RME
Any information that you can offer would be great.

No its still very much a mystery to me, still looking for someone to shed light on what the codes mean

HBL stands for home based ledger..basically a nominal of lads within the UK
Maybe detachment 410 was when he went overseas?

I have my Grandad's military record here in the UK. He was listed as HBL RME Det 410 22nd April 45 to 17th Oct 45.
My Father told me he went to Australia and on his return applied to live there but as my Nanna had diabetes they were not allowed! Australia's loss....

His name was Frederick Vickers from Hulme Manchester.

Not sure if Det 410 refers to being detached to Landing Craft 410 - from RM Museum info:
Training Flotillas
These initially were all manned by seamen rates, although at Eastney in Portsmouth, there were craft in 1940 manned by Marines for training purposes. In 1943 RN officers and ratings continued to carry out the major part of the crews’ instruction but by the end of World War II there were RM training staffs, with flotillas of various types of landing craft, including the following: 400 to 435 (incl 410), 437 and 490 of 1945. In a typical change over to RM staff, 235 RM LCP Flotilla relieved the training staff of RN Training Flotilla 188 as early as 18 June 1943. Some training flotillas also served in operations as Ancillary flotillas.
