Betty Greaves

Lived at Mount Pleasant, Magnum a widow aged 54 in 1881

Lived at Mount Pleasant, Magnum a widow aged 62 in 1891

From FreeBMD, the death of Betty Greaves is registered in the December quarter of 1906 aged 77.

I cannot seem to find her in the 1901 census; am I totally blind?

Thank you.

Thank you.

Betty's husband, Jonathan Greaves, died in 1881 so Betty would have been a widow for 20 years in 1901. They married in 1848.

Magnum was a quarry settlement near Holmfirth which does not exist any more. Present day villages in the vicinity are Scholes, Cartworth, Hade Edge.

I'm sorry......

but the only Greaves that I could find in the 1901 Census, appears to be an elder brother of Jonathan.

One Robert Greaves is listed at that time, as still living in the village of his birth - Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England.....the exact same village that both Betty and Jonathan were born in.

If I do manage to turn up anything else, I'll get back here. It's a shame that resolution was not achieved this time.

Hello and thank you for trying. However, there is something amiss as I know there are several Greaves in the Holmfirth area in the West Riding where both Jonathan and Betty were born; I am not sure how Ashton under Lyne in Lancashire comes into it.

Unfortunately, as I have said on here previously, my computer conked and my paper records are somewhat lacking. I do know that Jonathan and Betty's children were living in and around Magnum in 1901, as follows:

Joseph Greaves aged 51 and and his family at Hade Edge.
Hannah (nee Greaves) aged 46 and her husband Joseph Hall and family at Mount Pleasant.
Mary (nee Greaves) aged 43 and and her husband James Brammall and family at Mount Pleasant.
James Greaves aged 41 and family at Mount Pleasant.
Richard (Dick) Greaves aged 39 in his sister Mary Brammall's household.
Henry Greaves aged 36 and family at Mount Pleasant.
Enoch Greaves (aged 32) and his wife at Mount Pleasant.

But where is their mother Betty? As I said, am I blind or was she somehow missed?

Hi

I have found an  Elizabeth Greaves living in Southport with a niece surname Halsall and her brother but born in the area of Yorkshire Penistone which is near Holmfirth. The brothers name is Wainwright. Do you know what Bettys maiden name was??
Hope this helps you

Thank you Sandy but this is not her.

Her maiden name was Hirst and she was born at Gooseholes, which was part of the quarry village of Magnum. The whole family lived in the same village.

From the paper notes (thankfully I did make some!) I made a couple of years ago, I found her whole family but not her. I assume it was a relatively small village so I could not see how she would have been missed in the census.

I posted this believing I must have made a mistake and someone double checking would find her.
