O'Halloran
« on: Monday 22 March 10 02:02 GMT (UK) »
::) I am looking for information on my Great-Grandmother Margaret O'Halloran born about 1843 in County Clare.  I believe that Margaret emigrated to australia, then on to New Zealand, arriving about 1860 to 1865.  Margaret married a goldminer turned farmer, Daniel Hanlon from Cork (also recorded as O'Hanlon) in 1872, and they farmed at Moonlight, near Middlemarch in Central Otago New Zealand for 28 years, retiring to Dunedin in 1907, and Margaret died in 1919.
A Margaret O'Halloran arrived as an assisted immigrant in New South Wales in 1860 on the ship Tudor (she was aged 19 and came from Daughan in County Clare).
A Margaret O'Halloran saied from Melbourne, Victoria to Otago, New Zealand on the ship Alhambra in 1863.  Both seem to be likely matches.
Any help in filling in the gaps would be appreciated.

Unfortunately Clare Church records are not available online and as civil registration didn't begin in Ireland until 1864 you will have to rely on Church records. This will be very difficult without knowing which parish your ancestors came from. There is a lot of genealogical information on the Clare Library website http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm
North & East Cork Church records are available on a pay-per-view site http://www.irish-roots.ie/
Cork city & west Cork records are due to be released on www.irishgenealogy.ie later this year and this will be a free site.
Good luck with the research

added - I just spotted that you said she came from Daughan, Co Clare, I think that could be Vaughan, as in Ballyvaughan, this should help your search.

Thank you, Agho, very good of you to reply.
Yes, I had figured out the difficulties, and I am going nowhere until I discover the exact place of birth and/or both parents names for verification.
The Daughan birthplace was from the shipping passenger list, which is not 100% guaranteed to be my Great-Grandmother, and what was written down was what they thought the immigrant said.
I concluded too that Ballyvaughan was the nearest place name worth checking.
Regards, John.

marriage certificate

Information available on copies of New Zealand marriage certificates back before 1875 varied greatly.  Previously some uncertainty whether I could get a copy, must check back and see if the situation has changed since records went online.
Thanks for the suggestion, Obbie.

 8) With help from my cousins and targetted searching, I have confirmed that my Great-great-grandfather Daniel O'Hanlon/Hanlon came from near Kanturk, probably in the Clonfert Parish, Duhallow Barony, County Cork, Ireland.
He was born about 1835, and parents were Cornelius O'Hanlon and Margaret Murphy.  There is a newspaper extract reference to a Cornelius O'Hanlon death about 17 January 1898.

Daniel's wife was Margaret O'Halloran, and she came from Ballyhannon, near Quin, County Clare, Ireland.
Margaret was born about 1844, and parents were Michael O'Halloran from Ballyhannon, and Mary Meany from Knockanoura, County Clare.
This is probably as much information that I can hope for from Ireland, until Cork and Clare parish records are processed and available online.
Thanks to those that offered suggestions.  The information may help other family members.

The records for the North Cork parishes are already available online on the irish-roots site mentioned above. There are 2 Daniel Hanlons born around 1835 with father's name Cornelius, one in Castlemagner, Barony of Duhallow, the other in Donoughmore, Barony of Muskerry, both not far from Kanturk (Cstlemagner is the closer). The records in Castlemagner start in 1832 so you won't be able to go back any further using these records. If your ancestor came from Donoughmore the records there start around 1800. Have you conclusively tied the family to Duhallow area?

Other children born to Cornelius Hanlon in Castlemager, Johanna 1832, Margaret 1837 & 1840 (suggesting the first Margaret died), Jeremiah 1838 & Cornelius 1842. Do any of these names appear in Daniel & Margaret's children? Naming patterns can sometimes help narrow things down.
The Tithe Applotments taken in 1834 show a Cornelius Hanlan in the townland of Gurteenbgha.

;D  Thank you, Agho, that is very good of you.  Location information comes from a cousin who is very meticulous on his research, but we can all follow an incorrect lead, can't we?

Daniel's oldest son was Cornelius and only daughter Margaret Mary, second son Michael Patrick, but Cornelius was their grandfather and Margaret their grandmother, and Daniel only had these three children.

Finding the marriage recorded for Cornelius O'Hanlon and Margaret Murphy somewhere around 1830 would prove the location, no doubt.
No guarantee that birth or baptism would show up for Cornelius O'Hanlon or Margaret Murphy back around 1810, unless the parish records were complete back to then.

That gives us further clues for research, your help is greatly appreciated.
