Heavyside/Simpson Yorkshire c1870
« on: Saturday 20 March 10 16:47 GMT (UK) »
Hello first time poster here
I am bamboozled by this whole thing so I apologise if this is doing it all wrong!

I am looking for any information on the Greetham/Harrison and Heavyside/Simpson families around Yorkshire before 1870...where do I start?!

Thanks!
Greetham (Pately Bridge)
Harrison (Scarboro')
Heavyside (Harrogate)
Simpson (Yorkshire)

Thank you.

OK I've got the following information:
Susan Harrison (Scarborough 1869 - 1929) married George W Greetham. Her mother was Sophia but I cannot trace any name for her father and his family, nor Sophia's history.

Simulataneously I'm looking for the parents and history of James Heavyside (Harrogate 1870 - 1926) who was the husband of Sarah L Simpson (1870 - 1943).

Any info gratefully received!
Greetham (Pately Bridge)
Harrison (Scarboro')
Heavyside (Harrogate)
Simpson (Yorkshire)

Just looking at the Harrisons.  On the 1891 (I have not yet worked out how to find the reference numbers) Sophia is a widow aged 59, living at 5 Dale St, Bilton with Harrogate.  Susan is there with sister Bessie.  (I will post the full details if you like - but interestingly the Greethams live in the same street).

In 1881 Sophia is married but not with her husband, she's a servant in the Mortimer household in Bilton.  She gives her place of birth as Reigate (in 1891 it's Bletchingley).

Now this is interesting.  In 1871 there is still no sign of a Mr Harrison, but Sophia is at 2 Brook Square, Scarborough and is a photographer.  With her are:
Harry, 16, born York
Tom, 14, b.York
Robert, 12, b.Scarborough
Bell, 8, ditto
Bessy, 6, ditto
Susan, 3, ditto
I'm wondering whether Mr Harrison was a seaman.

Sorry this is piecemeal, but I'm gradually working back.  George Harrison married Sophia Standing, Jun 1862, Scarbro 9d, 467.
On the 1861 census George Harrison is a widower living at 39 Dumple St, Scarborough.  He is aged 31, keeps a Refreshment House, and was born in Driffield.  With him are Harry, Thomas and Robert as before, plus son Leonard aged 1, b. Scarborough.  Also:
Elizabeth Vassalli, 15, general servant, b.Scarborough
Jane Harrison, mother, 45, housekeeper, b.Malton
So you can work out which of the children were Sophia's in the 1871 and onwards - but not what happened to George after 1861.  Let me know if you want any more research - unless somebody beats me to it.
