1841/1851- Nether Alderley Lookup Please
« on: Friday 19 March 10 16:41 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find a John Perrin b.c. 1804 at Ringway,Hale, Cheshire. I've seen a reference to a John Perrin on a farm at Nether Alderley on the Cheshire Tithe Maps website. I am trying to confirm that this is the same John Perrin on my tree.
I would be grateful if anyone could look to see if appears on the 1841/1851 census at Nether Alderley.

Thanks  :)

There are two Cheshire John Perrins of about the right age in the 1851 census. The first was born in 1805 at Morley, Cheshire and was living at Rose Cottage, Nether Alderley, so he was probably the one on the tithe map. The other was born in 1807 at Pownall Fee, which was part of Wilmslow and (from my local knowledge) I suspect, later became known as Ringway. This second one was living at Oversley Ford, Pownall Fee in 1851 which I think was the opposite side of Wilmslow from Nether Alderley. He was probably your ancestor. The 1841 census does of course only give birth counties.

I've done a bit more research for you Jubee. It would appear that Pownall Fee (which no longer exists) and Morley (which still does) are virtually the same area, both a mile or two from what we now know as Ringway (the airport). So either of those John Perrins could be your ancestor!

Thanks Latchfordian, I thought things weren't as simple as I thought... ::) but that's all part of the fun of the chase.

What set me on this search was that I have a copy of my 4x grt. grandfather's will which states that his son Thomas Perrin, a farmer of Nether Alderley was executor of the will. I searched the Family Search websites and found that there is a burial for Thomas Perrin in 1833 in Alderley. The Tithe Map is dated 1842 so he obviously wouldn't be on there, but there is a John Perrin and an Elizabeth Perrin (possibly Thomas' widow) both occupiers of land in Nether Alderley. I also noted a baptism in Ringway for a John Perrin with parents Thomas and Elizabeth in 1804. Without seeing the actual image of this record I'm not sure whether it can be more precise as to birthplace.

As you mentioned that Pownall Fee and Morley are around the Ringway area I need to investigate this a lot more.
Once again many thanks for the info  :)

The Perrins you mention are my direct ancestors. John born Ringway, Bowdon was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Whitelegg. They had a farm in Nether alderley and John took tenancy of the farm opposite the year he married.

Maybe you would like to send me a private mail.

Hello, I wonder if you could help?.

I lived for a number of years at Oversley Ford Farm. A home which despite its noisy neighbour, grew to be very close to my heart.

I saw your response on Roots and it occurred to me that you used the name 'Perrin'. My own investigations led me to a John Perryn who lived at OversleyFord for many years, having leased or purchased the holding from Peter Finney-Davenport. who lived there 1785-1799 when he returned to the family seat Fulshaw Hall.

I have no doubt that if you are seriously searching, you will already be aware of this and the Tithes records which clearly show his presence within Pownall Fee.

My reason for making contact is that my own records (photos, etc), were lost in my retirement move to Spain.

I am simply trying to trace drawing, painting, or photograph of a place I loved which now lies desecrated by the fire station which serves the second runway at Manchester Airport.

I would be very grateful if you could inform me if you come across any information which you think may help.

Thanks

Cam Tomson

I have no papers/pictures of the area and I have yet to trace that part of the Perrins at Oversley- though I did see it on the tithe maps.   I am planning to visit Ringway & Bowdon area next month, I'll see whats around to photograph.  :)

Hi, well I did get to Ringway and Oversley, but you are right, all that I remember of the area is under the runways, the tunnels and the emergency access routes into the area. There is nothing visible. I did get up onto the last piece of the Hale road, now renamed the Old Wilmslow Road just in front of the Romper; still doing business but I guess more upmarket than when I was last in there.  The Chapel, now occupied by a design studio is there- not easy to see because the yew trees obscure the view.   I took a picture of part of the entrance but I have a better one from about 1900.
I went on to Morley and the amount of development at the top of the hill has changed all that.
I suppose the basic rule is you can't go back.   Sorry no better news, I have decided to begin searching for old postcard pictures of the area.
