Hi Rob,
Great to hear from you and to find a family link ;D
Have literally just returned from holiday but will hook out my data ont he family as I have quite a bit on the Crolls.
Jane Stirling still proving to be a headache but I think a copy of the St Mungos  Lair Owners and MI booklet has arrived during my absence so I may have more to add to the tree fingers crossed.
Will be in touch, do you have a tree on Ancestry?
My link is via Williams brother David who is my great great grandfather and I have info on David Croll and Catherine Downies parents.
Regards,
Debs

Have a wee look at this Dolly: (Who's who is Glasgow)

http://gdl.cdlr.strath.ac.uk/eyrwho/eyrwho0210.htm

The last paragraph in particular. Could the David Croll mentioned be any relation? If so, there seems to be quite a few articles about him to be found if you Google 'David Croll, Glasgow'

Anne

Hi Anne,

Thank you so much, I will have a look at the link shortly as I returned  from holiday a couple of hours ago and turned on the computor to catch up on my emails whilst the kettle was boiling and the first wash went on!  ;D
Regards,
Debbie

Hi Debs,
So pleased to make contact.  Not on ancestry - like you have lots of info on Crolls in Glasgow and the Dumbarton Rope Works.  How do we go about sharing?  My info is all on word docs.  Lost all my gedcom a few years back with a computer crash but fortunately had hard and stick copies of the word docs - it's just the thought of all that work typing it back in!!!!  Excited to hear you have more info on David and Catherine as I had come to a dead end and was waiting until our next trip to UK.  (Live in Sydney Aust).  By the way my second name is Stirling after Jane so have been very keen to learn more about her - only have family snippets as to why the name has carried down the generations.   This is my first contact with rootschat so a bit of a novice but really keen to exchange what I have.

Hi again Deb,
Looks like I will have to rejoin Ancestry.  That's OK unless you can think of another way we can exchange email addresses.  In the meantime will paste below limited info I have on David and Catherine.

Debs, I'm interested in all Downies and intrigued by the different locations where the children of this couple were born as it is quite unusual for people to move about so much at that time. Who are Catherine's parents and where was she born?

Hi Ian,
Thanks for the interest and hopefully there will be a link with what you know about the Downies.
Heres what I have:

Catherine Downie born 26 Dec 1771 in Campsie, Stirling.
Witnesses - James Downie and Robert Lindsay
to:
William Downie a Collier in Campsie and
Janet/Jean McLaughan/McLauchlane

Not a lot but felt like it when discovered!  :D

Regards,
Debs

ps do have a tree normally avail on Ancestry but currently saving up for the sub renewal and will be happy to share it when sorted!!
