Washington, West sussex
« on: Wednesday 17 March 10 14:04 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me out with Washington, West Sussex. I have an ancestor, Isaac Burrell, who was born there but I wondered which church he would have been baptised in?  He was born in c1777.

If your Burrells were people of substance (rich) suggest you also look at the Burrells in the adjoining parish of West Grinstead.
You will find that branch of the Burrell family had (and still has) a significant country estate in West Grinstead and includes a major collector of antiquities and a governor of the Bank of England.  Hence they also had a London address as well.
My Ancestor, William Rook, was their butler in both Sussex and London between 1800-1840.

Should have added that the Burrell estate address in West Grinstead is Knepp Castle and although I do not know the London address the family had in the 18th century, their parish church was probably Saint Mary-St Marylebone Road, Saint Marylebone, London where my ancestor married in 1809.

Knepp Castle hold extensive archives so if they were connected you may get something there.

Roy, thanks for taking the time to reply to me.  i did wonder if my Isaac Burrell was connected to the wealthy Burrells, but i have a hunch he is not.  he may be part of the Burrell family from Sussex who you mention, but perhaps from the poorer side of the family! I can't somehow see a rich Burrell family member joining the army (I don't think he had a high rank - i am waiting for his army records to come through).  However, maybe i shall find some more on him sometime.  Your ancestor, the butler, sounds interesting.

Hi Linda

I had a look through the transcripts of the West Grinstead parish records (the Church of St George) and there were no references to any b/m/burial records for your Isaac, although there were a few for the 'other lot'.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply.  My Isaac died in Lewes, East Sussex and I have  his death certificate.  I am more interested now in his birth and marriage to Maria so maybe I will strike lucky as time progresses.

Kind regards
Linda
