James Rhind was born in 1830 near Glasgow but was baptised in Moray where his father was born. His parents were William Rhind and Mary Whitelaw, married in 1830. William's parents were James Rhind, a mason, and Elspet Sandison (the only evidence of this that I can find is via the marriage of Jane Rhind who was sister of of William)
James was brought up in Moray. I think he was staying with his aunt Jane Findlay in Dallas, in 1841 census, working as a farm labourer. In 1851 census, he was a farm labourer in parish of New Spynie, working as a farm labourer. He married Mary Winchester in November 1851.
Mary's parents were Thomas Winchester and Agnes McKenzie. Interestingly, James' sister, Mary Rhind, aged 15, was a farm servant to the family. She later married a Robert Squair.
James and Mary left Scotland, from Glasgow to Auckland on The Viola in 1864 with their children, Mary, James, Elizabeth and Johanna.
Possibly his uncle (but haven't proved this yet though James' brother, William stayed with them in 1851 census but marked as son, but also boarder...also ages don't tally as father/son) Alexander Rhind and Isobel Sellar left for Lyttleton, NZ in 1960. Theeir children were William, an infant, not Wm above, James, Elizabeth, Margaret and Alexander. They settled in Christchurch, Canterbury, NZ.
Another uncle (I think), John Rhind and wife, Elspet McKnockiter left Glasgow for Bluff, NZ in 1863 with their children, Margaret, James, George, Ann, William, Alexander, David and Jane. Think they settled in Invercargill, NZ
