GWR casualties in the Great War
« on: Monday 15 March 10 17:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I have embarked on a project on flickr with the go ahead from Swindon Library.
They have a collection on Flickr which includes a set of GWR casualties of the Great War. The pages are scanned in but only those based in Swindon are currently tagged and listed. I am currently building a searchable database that identifies each separate GWR employee, his occupation [within the company], where he was based and the department, where given. There is supplementary info for some as well which has been included.

http://www.flickr.com/people/gwr_casualties/

I would appreciate any feedback or constructive criticism on the project which is still ongoing.
The aim is to be able to do a search within flickr for a surname and to find out where they were based, when they died. Most have photos although there are some without.

ps Im crossposting this to the WW1 forum as well, oh, and for Wiltshire ie Swindon

Hi Roofy
Looks very good but not being a flickr user - (I know I can learn)
1.the date order of the pictures is random to say the least
2. The resolution is such that i for one can't read the names under each photo on the collective pages / pictures. ( I dont think I need specs?
Well done you for trying and I have some rellies from sWINDON SO i HOPE TO SEE THIS HAPPEN.

Hi roofy

I don't have a particular interest in finding GWr people but I like new databases so thought I would have a look.

I tested it out and can read the names under the photos perfectly. And I searched on a name and it came up with a person.

It looks very useful. Well done!

Hello Roofy,

A great project and far easier to read than the originally posted whole pages I was looking at the other day.

I just hope to see Ernest Lambourne on there some day.  :)

All right all right I am just getting old and following the advice and going back I can see them all well.
Any way that doesn't detract from it being good oh.

Hello Mack,
thankyou for that. It never occurred to me to ask people if they had any extra info that they would like to share. Was Joseph Dodson your great grandfather?
Would it be ok to put the info onto the flickr page as part of his notes?
Best wishes
Ruth
