How do I discover what their medals were awarded for?
« on: Saturday 13 March 10 21:16 GMT (UK) »
A friend has recently got the genealogy bug. Her Great Grandfather was Abel Camp (b.15/12/1895). He was awarded a DCM and an MM. We've found his medal roll index card, but we wondered what he was awarded them for. How do we find out?

eta: Thanks in advance.  :)

Doesn't tell you what for, but his DCM was gazetted in 1918.

His MM obviously preceded it.

44th Bde RFA were in 74th Division from July 1917 onwards, serving in Egypt and Palestine, then returned to France in May 1918.

Does his medal card say he qualified for the Star, or just BWM and Victory medals?

71578 Opl. A. Camp, M.M., R.F.A. (Brighton).

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in action. He set a magnificent example of courage and cheerfulness under trying circumstances, and always volunteered when there was any dangerous duty to be undertaken.

Hi Bilge,

Shows how hit and miss the LG's search facility is.
That entry didn't come up at all when I had a look!  ::)

I suspect if you contacted the RA museum they would probally be able to tell you from the War Diaries what he actually did!
