Death of Ann LOWE - St Albans 1850's
« on: Saturday 13 March 10 17:21 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know the date of death of Ann Lowe, widow of Thomas Lowe, a labourer of St Michaels?  In 1851 she was a pauper, aged 75, living with daughter and son-in-law Eliza and William Bail at Pound Field, St Michaels, St Albans.  She does not seem to appear on the 1861 census so assume she died before then.  There are 3 possible deaths of Ann Lowe on BMD records in St Albans - Sept 1852, Mar 1853, and Jun 1856.  Before I send off for all 3 certificates, can anyone help please?

I know its a bit late in the day for a response to your query bu had a wander through St Michaels churchyard today in St Albans which would have been one of two local churches close to Pound field. Unfortunately there was no sign of any gravestones with the name Ann Lowe. Thought they might have thrown some light on which of the three death certificates would have been the correct one if you havent already ordered them.

if you give all Known details , her age, last known address, daughter and son in laws names etc then that should help narrow it down.
I find it best to deal directly with the Register office for the area, they are usually more willing to help.

Thank you so much for checking the churchyard.  As Ann Lowe was listed as a pauper, I don't expect the family could afford a gravestone.  I am currently awaiting the second certificate as the first was not the right one.
Thanks for your help anyway.

Many thanks for your tip about contacting the local Register Office and providing their address.  I didn't think they would be prepared to do this.

Your welcome Banger, was a lovely day and needed an excuse to get out in the fresh air! You are right that it was unlikely that there would be a gravestone in the circumstances but I thought I might find possibly other family members there anyway. Whilst the graveyard is in a beautiful setting unfortunately time has taken its toll on most of the gravestones. I live in St Albans so if I can help in anyway please dont hesitate to ask.

Regards

Clare

Thanks Clare for your offer.  I now have the correct death certificate for Ann Lowe - she died on the 30th January 1853, aged 82, at St Michaels.  If you get the chance sometime, other members of my family who lived and died in St Albans were William Bail (61), date of death 7 May 1875 at Alexandra Road, his widow Eliza Bail, (86),          9 December 1900 at 37 Alexandra Road, George Bail (their son, 81), 9 July 1911 at 33 Marlborough Buildings, and Helen Burns Bail (George's widow, 81) 7 March 1916 at Lower Paxton Road.  Any local information would be appreciated.  I live in Kent and have never visited St Albans - perhaps I should!  There is no urgency, only if or when you have time.
Thanks again, Sue.
