Welcome to Rootschat, Norwich Lady  :)

It looks as though your SUGDENs stayed in the Norwich area and were not part of the family Patches2 was looking for, who emigrated to Canada - is that right?

This looks like the family leaving for Canada:

SS Canada, Liverpool-Montreal, 22 April 1909

Geo A. SUGDEN Joiner 21
Ada M. do Wife 20
Jack do Child 1

contracted to land at Quebec

Canadian passenger lists confirm that they landed at Quebec on 1 May 1909; ultimate destination listed as Toronto.

The son Jack SUGDEN died on 19 Sep 1924 at Oshawa Hospital, Ontario, aged 16yrs 6 months.  He was a tinsmith, son of George Alfred and Ada Marian SUGDEN, both born England,  whose Canadian address was Oshawa Post Office, East Whitby. His death record shows that Jack had suffered an accidental bullet wound to the abdomen eight months earlier, and died from a secondary haemorrhage.

Jack was buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa on 22 September 1924.

N.B. Although he was Jack in the passenger list and death record, he may have been officially John - the name in which he was enumerated in the Canadian 1911 census in East Whitby, Ontario, with parents George (a butcher) and Ada, and sister Alice who is shown as having been born in Ontario in April 1910.

Re Stanley William Sugden/Lucy Sugden and George Alfred/Ada Wiseman
George Sugden b. 1856 married to Mary Edith Dove. They had 10 living children, one being GEORGE ALFRED b. 1887 married to ADA WISEMAN and also my grandfather William Robert Sugden b 2nd July 1885 who married to Edith May Yallop. He had  3 brothers who also emigrated to Canada – George Alfred, Donald Leslie and Oliver.
My grandparents had STANLEY WILLIAM b June 1908 also LUCY b 28th February 1909 and died the following day 1st March 1909. Ruby b 1911 was my grandfather’s sister i.e. sister to George Alfred. She was younger than my father (her nephew). I can remember Aunt Ruby and Aunt Edith (who never married)
Uncle Donnie and Aunt Aggie and came over from Canada and attended my daughters christening in 1971.
I have a photo of the grave in Norwich of George Sugden and Mary Dove together with their daughter Edna Daisy known simply as Daisy. (sister to George Alfred)
I also have photos of my grandfather William Robert as a young man and also just before he died in 1969, together with Edith sister to George Alfred.
GEORGE ALFREDS grandparents were William Edward Sugden born 1824/1825 in Bradford Yorkshire and MARY ELIZABETH HAMILTON was b. 1830 in Fredericton New Brunswick Canada.
They are both buried here in Norwich UK.
Has anybody any more information on them. I know that he served in the 33rd Yorkshire Regiment and was posted to Canada in the late 1840’s. His first child was born in the UK in 1850. He then went to Scutari in the Crimea then back to the UK to Chatham St Mary Kent where George was born in 1856. I know nothing on wedding possibly in Canada or Mary Hamiltons family. Can anybody help?

Norwich Lady    thank you for all your info
I am daughter of Robert Sugden
        my -grand parents George/Ada

You asked about Mary Elizabeth Hamilton-I have little info
There is some question if she served with Florence Nightengale in the crimea as she would have travelled in the military with her husband

Am also wondering background of Mary Elizabeth Dove-there is some suggestion that she was from Newfoundland
and  North American Indian

Am still unclear as to the 10 children of George/Mary

 1.  William Robert(85)
 2.  George Alfred (87)
 3.  Donald Leslie  (97)
 4.  Oliver   Henry  (04)

  5.  Edith Gertrude                 who did not marry
  6.  Edna Daisy                      who went by Daisy

then it gets fuzzy for the last four ????
     May
     Gladys
     Nellie
     Ruby

hoping this gets through as this is all new to me

Hi Norwich Lady

I realise this thread is a little dated now....

However, I'm researching Sugden in Chatham a little earlier than the dates mentioned here, and wondered if you had come across anything in your research to indicate the Norwich Sugdens may be linked to my William Sugden b.1800 Chatham, Kent..??

These birth details come from military attestation papers, but I'm yet to be find anything else to support them, along with parent details.

Kind regards
