Honor Gostlin - James List - George List
« on: Friday 12 March 10 09:27 GMT (UK) »
My 4xgr.grandmother was Honor Gostlin, born 1760/1, died London May 1861.  Together with James List, she had a son George, born in Gt. Yarmouth, in 1791.  However, I can't find any record of a marriage - does the name Gostlin appear anywhere please?

According to the 1851 Census she was born in Suffolk, Norton.  And according to the 1861 Census she was born in Norfolk!

Honor married four times (if indeed she married James List as number 1 husband) - 2nd husband ? Bardell, possibly Norwich; 3rd husband Thomas Mather, possibly St. Peter Mancroft, Norwich 1809; and 4th husband George Dyer, St Dunstan's in the West 1824.

After Honor died in 1861, at 100 years and 8 months old, there was a report stating that she had been survived by a twin sister - I have no more information on this at the moment, so no name for a sister.

Any connections/information out there please?  Thanks!  :)

Hello Diddy,

Thanks for this information - I've been to the Norfolk Record Office and seen the original record for Honour's marriage to Thomas Mather, thank you.  (On the original, it's 'Bardell', as you've stated from FreeReg.)  I've also got a record of her fourth marriage to George Dyer, obtained from London.  Because of her longevity, there are census returns which link certain things together.

What I was really after was any knowledge of Honour having married James List (who, together, are my direct ancestors) - I've got her son's record of baptism in Yarmouth and, indeed, his marriage in Yarmouth in 1811.

I'm grateful to you for your help, though - thank you very much.  James List just doesn't seem to appear anywhere, prior to the 1791 record of baptism - come to that, neither does Honour!   ::)

Hi,

I would be intrested if you have any connection to the Gostlin's located in Gloustershire around 1800-1900's.

Currently I have traced my family to a

William Gostlin - who's family lived in Gloucestershire Slimbridge - Estimate Birth was 1821.

Hi Alistair,

Can't help, sorry to say.  My Honor Gostlin wasn't a Gostlin for long - at least up to the research I've made so far - and as I can't find her prior to 1791, in Gt Yarmouth, I have no idea where any of her family may have ended up.

Sorry not to have been any help and good luck with your research.

Best wishes,
Chris

Hello Chris,

Can't help with Honor's first marriage but the second one, to David Bardell, appears in the Family search pilot.

17th April 1796, Great Yarmouth - Honour List to David Bardell.

The odd thing is, when I looked for it in the online Norfolk parish registers - couldn't find it.  Really annoying, as it may have given useful witnesses.

But they do appear in the Banns list for Great Yarmouth, April 1796.  It must be the right one, but Honor is described as a Spinster.....

Dear Yorkslass -

Oh my goodness!  Thank you so much for this - you have no idea how hard I've been looking.  I've been to the Norfolk Archive Centre, joined the Norfolk Family History group and looked on Family Search.  This is wonderful stuff - thank you so very much for posting this to me.

I'll continue with trying to find out about James List - there must be something, somewhere and I'm determined not to give up!

Very best wishes,
Chris

Since last year I have found Honour's marriage record to James List (Leest on the certificate), which took place in Lound, Suffolk in 1789.  It would appear that James Leest was born in Lound in 1764 to parents John and Elizabeth, having brothers William (1760) and John (1762).  By the time Honour and James' son, George, was born in 1791, the surname had changed to List.

I now have proof of Honour's four marriages: James List, Lound, 1789; David Bardell, Gt. Yarmouth, 1796; Thomas Mather, St. Peter Mancroft, Norwich, 1809; and George Dyer, St. Dunstan's In The West, London, 1824.

It would also appear that Honour's sister's name was Charlotte (possibly her twin), who married Robert Parker in Lound in 1792, having a daughter, Charlotte, in 1793.  I have made this connection because Robert Parker was bequeathed a gift in George Dyer's Will.

Now all I need to find is a record of Honour and Charlotte's birth - any ideas anybody??  According to the 1851 Census, Honour said that her place of birth was Norton, Suffolk - the closest Norton to Suffolk is Norton Subcourse in Norfolk, which is not too far from Lound.  In the 1861 Census she said that her place of birth was Norfolk, so could be Norton Subcourse.  Any help/ideas/anything would be most welcomed!  I would be looking at around 1760/61 for any birth record as Honour was reportedly 100 years old when she died in 1861 - at which time she was survived by her sister which is amazing and a terrific achievement at that period in history.

I'd be grateful for any help at all - thank you!
