Forbes/Royal Artillary
« on: Thursday 11 March 10 22:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Looking for information on James Staats Forbes, Quartermaster, Royal  Horse Artillery, Woolwich, Kent. Born approx 1796 Scotland and died 1846 Woolwich. Wife - Ann.
Particularly on his son, Arthur Rowley Forbes  born approx 1828 who emmigrated to Australia and married Catherine Mutter Young of Lanark, Scotland.
Have the census records for 1841 but Arthur is gone by the 1851 census.
Any help on this family at all appreciated.
Thanks!

I'm not quite sure what you are looking for so there is an Arthur FORBES baptised Woolwich (born 21 Aug 1827) 7 Sep 1827 son of James and Ann http://www.familysearch.org (select Record Search Pilot) where you will also find other children baptised to James and Ann.

Are you looking for a marriage for James and Ann?  If so, does the 1841 census indicate where everybody was born?

Thanks for that. I have actually managed to find a lot more info since I posted the query including James and Ann's marriage and the birth/baptism records for Arthur and his siblings. I would really like to know now when Arthur migrated to Australia, (which I have been very unsucessful at). I know he is missing by the 1851 census but he didn't marry until 1870 in Qld, Australia, so I have a few missing years. Would also like to know where James and Ann were born. The 1841 census only lists Scotland for James and Cerk, Ireland for Ann.
Appreciate your time in replying.

I assume Ann's birthplace would be Cork ie. the county of Cork in Ireland?  With regards to James was he still serving when he died or was he an army pensioner would you know - pensioners are easier to trace?

James is listed as residing at the Royal Artillery Barracks at the time of his death, as a Quarter Master Sergeant, so I am presuming from this that he was still in the army and not on the pension.
Do you think if I obtained his service records I would be able to trace birthplace and perhaps parents names or did they not keep such information in army records that early? I have very little knowledge of these records in the UK. WW1 and WW2 records here in Australia keep this info but of course that is 100 years further on than James when record keeping had improved!
Thanks

Thank you gortonboy.

Sure can tell I am new at this huh!  Just getting back into researching some more family information after a phone call out of nowhere recently from someone who does up bush graves.  He only knows the surname was FORBES and an approx. year of death and the position of the grave in bush Queensland.

Thanks again.
