Griffins of Islington, Tiley or is it Tilney cum Islington????
« on: Thursday 11 March 10 08:56 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am trying to trace 2 brothers - James and Thomas Griffin- who were living in the North Wooton area with their families in the 1790's- 1820's.

James Griffin was born circa 1777. He married Elizabeth Thompson in 1797 and died in 1823.
Thomas Griffin was born circa 1772.  He married Rebecca Humphries and died in 1818.

I have searched the North Wooton PR's on pilot search but cannot find any trace of baptisms for James and Thomas.

According to James marriage licence in 1797- he was listed at that time as being of 'Islington'.
I have then found a burial in the North Wooton records for a Mary- daughter of James Griffin of Tilney in 1799.

So I am wondering if Tilney could be Tilney cum Islington??
And if it could- can anyone check the Islington PR's please to see if they can find the family of James and Thomas Griffin??

Many thanks!
Kylie B

Hi Kylie

I have found that usually Tilney refers to Tilney St.Lawrence & occasionally Tilney All Saints but in this case I think it refers to Tilney cum Islington.

Looking at the PRs I found these two entries which may be yours.

Tilney cum Islington baptisms
15th Oct 1798, Mary d/o Jas & Elis'th GRIFFIN (the ATs say -  born 15th Aug)
19th May 1801 the daughter of James & Elis'th GRIFFIN (no name of child was given)

As you have a Mary baptised 1799 I checked the burials but no GRIFFIN entries at all.

I do have other GRIFFEN entries on PRs in & around Tilney cum Islington which my mum & I have transcribed. If you would like these then PM me your email address & I will send them to you.

Regards
Sally

That looks like it would be right- James and Elizabeth married in 1797, so it wpuld seem right that they lived in Islington (where James was from) after they were married, and moved to the North Wooton area after that.

Is there any sign of a Baptism for James in the PR''s?? He would have been born around 1777- and if I am right in surmising that Thomas is his brother, he would have been born around 1772.

Many thanks for checking for me.....are there any other PR's that I should be getting checked if they were from Islington/Tilney cum Islington??

Thanks again
Kylie
