Southampton Old Cemetery
« on: Wednesday 10 March 10 22:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks.

I have  relatives interred in the same grave in Southampton Old Cemetery.

I have their details, the section and grave number, but would like to know if there is a headstone in place.

Does anyone know who I could contact to find out?  From here in Yorkshire, it's a bit far for a day trip.

Thanks,

David

Thanks Paco. I've tried contacting them via their email address on the website but it's not connecting/working/available and my request keeps getting bounced back.

Hi David

Out of interest what is the section number as i have a copy #123 and found my G-Grandfathers headstone, this was after using other plots as a starting point as quite a few are missing and the graves are a LOT closer then you think.

Steve
ps; i live in Oz and "tramped" through the cemetery last year with mum (73yrs) on a rainy day, it was so comical but we got the result that we wanted!

Hiya Steve.

The section no. is D183. The grave no. is 68.

But I've just received an email from a Rootschatter that the area including that section is heavily overgrown and the majority of the headstones are either illegible or are laid face down/ fallen over. In brief , there is not a lot to see.

It's a crying shame that more of the country's cemeteries are falling into a similar state. But they aren't deemed to be important are they, yet,to genealogists, they are a priceless historical resource.

Thanks for taking an interest,Steve and good hunting.

Regards, David.

Hi David

I went to the Hampshire Record Office this afternoon and found that they have Memorial Inscriptions for many places and in them are entries for the Old Southampton Cemetery.
They are indexed in the sections of the Cemetery and then there are the actual inscriptions.

I couldn't look yours up as I didn't have the Section number or details but if you post a message here, you could ask for anybody living near Winchester who could pop in and check it for you.

It will be a while before I go back but if you get no response, let me know and I'll check it when I go back

Regards

Jan
