On their marriage certificate James Smith is a blacksmith and his father a spring maker.
Still hunting, thanks for the reply, if you have any other ideas, please let me know, I need all the help I can get  ;D

What was James Smith's occupation on the 1911 census, not a publican I take it, or you would have mentioned that.  :)

I've had a look at the 1890 Kelly's directory for Durham, pages of pubs, but no Aitkin listed as publican

Just  thought of this on the 1911 census one of the daughters is working at a tea house. Probably not a clue though.

, I don't have his will, hadn't really thought of that, I guess my mind is elsewhere, that might be a nice thing to have anyhow, are copies expensive? and where do you get them from?

You can apply for a probate search to  the Postal Searches and Copies Department, The Probate Registry, Castle Chambers, Clifford Street, York, YO1 9RG
The standard fee for searching for the will of a named deceased is £5 - this covers a 4 year search period and includes a single copy of the grant of probate together with the will (if any) - extending the search period costs an additional £3 for each 4 year extension

You can download an application form for a Probate Search at
